2 Session 1 Draft of Capstone Part I Session 1 Capstone Assignment: Part I I ntroduction (one to two paragraphs) For my capstone project, I chose to discuss staffing shortages in the healthcare field. Strengthening the healthcare workforce is a top priority. Hiring procedures need to be scrutinized as healthcare staffing shortages are expected to rise. This topic is really important to me because it is only getting worse. High quality patient care is linked to better overall outcomes. In America, we are no longer the leader in quality care, and data shows poor outcomes. Improving employee satisfaction, and promoting a good work/life balance may help improve low employee retention. Retaining highly trained nursing staff can steer any organization in the correct direction. Background of the project topic or issue (one to two pages): How did you select this topic or issue? I selected this issue because I have experienced it on the nursing floor. This is a common issue among facilities across the nation. Skilled staffing ratios are important to meeting state and federal guidelines. The administrator must be diligent while dealing with staffing rations because it is a direct link to high quality care. A higher nurse to patient ratio has shown to have better outcomes. Tackling the low staffing ratios and implementing policies can avoid negative outcomes.
3 What will be the setting for the project? I want to collaborate with my mentor and peers to generate ideas on how to build a cohesive staff and increase retention rates. The setting will be a hospital. Who will be your contact there? For this project I will be working with Carrie Goodlake. She is an ICU RN and now a hospital administrator. I am excited to see what data and solutions we can come up with. I look forward to interpreting the data and finding quality solutions. What is the perceived need for the project? The perceived need for the project will be to collect data. Applying statistics and research can guide us with better staffing and retention rates. Policy implementation. There's a delicate balance between high quality patient care and making the organization profitable. What does literature have to say about the importance of the issue or topic? The American Hospital Association states, “America will face a shortage of up to 124,000 physicians by 2033 and will need to hire at least 200,000 nurses per year to meet increased demand and to replace retiring nurses. There also are critical shortages of allied health and behavioral health professionals, especially in historically marginalized rural and urban communities. These workforce shortages — combined with an aging population, a rise in chronic diseases and behavioral health conditions, and advancements in the “state-of-the-art” of care delivery — all contribute to the need for supportive policies so that America’s health care workforce can ensure access to care and be adequately prepared for the delivery system of the future”. (Strengthening the Health Care Workforce, 2024) Healthcare administrators have gotten creative, when dealing with staff retention and onboarding of new employees.
