beliefs that are important to the coach. This helps to create consistency in your

which allows to have an expected and desired outcome.

Philosophy? (10 marks

Identify what is most important to you: It is vital to identify what values or goals
are important to you as a coach to create a successful coaching philosophy. Start
developing a coaching philosophy by identifying the things that you can never
compromise as a coach; this will help to understand what is acceptable to you as
a coach and what not. This will also help you to evaluate how your coaching
behavior is influenced by your values. Understanding your core values is crucial
to determine your coaching style. Several value assessment tests can be used to
identify these critical skills.
-
Learn from your experiences: Many coaches learn from their coaches they had
while engaging in a sport. They bring their experiences and incorporate the
values they learnt from several situations. Most of the coaches have been
coached by someone who they respect and trust. While others may have been
coached by someone who did not treat the athletes with the same dignity and
respect. One should reflect on these behaviors and life lessons that they have
learnt throughout their journey. This practice can help them to understand what
techniques, values, and styles they can incorporate in their coaching philosophy
based on their experiences as an athlete.
-
What is your sport coaching style? : Everyone has a unique coaching style with
different strengths and weaknesses. Coaching style is determined mostly by your
behavior. Having knowledge about your coaching style will help you to
understand which type of environment is best suited for you to perform. It will
also help to comprehend your motivations and will enhance your ability to adapt
to different situations. It is important to put athletes and their needs at the
center of focus in their coaching approach which will make the athletes valued
and important.
-
Discover your sport coaching philosophy: As a coach it is important to define the
true meaning of success. One should understand that winning is not entirely
based on who scored higher or lower. As a coach one should understand what
success means to them and how you define success based on your values and
beliefs. One should also think about the behavior that you want to show and
how consistently showing that behavior would impact yourself and your
athletes. This can help you to create a framework in your coaching style.
Discovering a behavior and how it can impact the athletes plays a huge role as it
connects your core values to being a coach. Defining the coaching philosophy in
a succinct statement and changing the statement until one becomes fully
satisfied with their final version is completely fine as it gives you a better
understanding about what closely aligns with you and your values.
-
Keep it visible and alive: The final step is to keep your work somewhere where
you can constantly review and see it every day. This practice can help you to
constantly remember what is important to you and how you can put it into
practice.
5.

Being considerate: when I coach, I want the athletes to feel safe, included,
