PSY 355 Module Five Milestone Template Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Part One Apply the foundational concepts of gender schema theory to address each of the following rubric criteria in 2 to 3 sentences: 1. Describe how gender schema theory explains the ways in which you process information about masculinity and femininity within your culture. “Gender schema theory argues that children are active learners who essentially socialize themselves and actively organize others’ behavior, activities, and attributes into gender categories, which are known as schemas.” (Worthy, 2020) The gender schema theory highlights how children acquire knowledge about male and female roles through their culture. 2. Describe the potential socio-psychological advantages of possessing a unique combination of masculine and feminine personality traits . When an individual possesses the combination of masculine and feminine personality traits, they are able to connect with both genders with ease and be open minded towards the different gender roles and stereotypes. Having both personality traits has the ability to avoid discrimination such as sexism, which is a prevalent social conflict with both genders. 3. Describe how the deconstruction of traditional gender roles supports efforts toward achieving gender equality (e.g., pay equity, political representation, organizational leadership). The deconstruction of gender roles supports efforts toward achieving gender equality by eliminating the importance of one gender over the other. Using the example of pay equity, men have been known to be favored over women with how much more money they make. When there is a deconstruction of gender roles, it allows and promotes gender equality. In political representation and organizational leadership, there is no difference of what a man or woman can excel in so they should be viewed as equal. 4. Describe the strengths and limitations of gender schema theory as it applies to the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusivity. A strength of the gender schema theory as it applies to the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusivity is the deconstruction of traditional gender roles by taking into account that culture effects gender norms. The biggest limitation of the gender schema theory is the differences within the same gender. Part Two Apply the foundational concepts of social role theory to address each of the following rubric criteria in 2 to 3 sentences: 1. Describe how social role theory explains the ways in which cultural norms reinforce the biological foundations of social roles. 1
Alice Eagly and Wendy Wood use the social role theory to highlight the way that biology and culture interact. An example of this is men are expected to be taller and stronger than women. The biological difference in the heights and strength of men and women has resulted in a cultural norm that men should be expected to be taller and stronger. (Myers, 2021) 2. Describe the influence of social role expectations within the various levels of your social ecosystem. In my microsystem, I am expected and seen to be a nurturer or caretaker by my family. I participate in the social role expectations by cleaning and cooking for my family and being there whenever they need me to be. By doing this, I am showing my family that this is how women should be. The other levels of my ecosystem are surrounded by women that are independent and do everything for themselves, which breaks the cultural norms of being a housewife or caretaker. 3. Describe the ways in which your social, cultural, or spiritual attitudes might reinforce social role stereotypes. The social, cultural, and spiritual attitudes have the ability to reinforce social role stereotypes. I am a Christian so I am expected to treat individuals as Jesus Christ treated them and be an upstanding citizen. I am an athlete and have a history of playing basketball so I am expected to be in shape and healthy. 4. Describe the strengths and limitations of social role theory as it applies to the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusivity. A strength of the social role theory as it applies to the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusivity is the description of the similarities and differences between boys and girls stem from the social roles that were obtained by their cultures. A limitation of the social role theory would be that it does not specify the differences between males and females. References: Myers, D. G., & Twenge, J. M. (2021). Social Psychology. Worthy, L. D.
