With your second Instructor Practical Application Session, what did you notice about changes in your skill set? What were areas of growth? Identify at least 2 distinct areas of needed (continued) growth for your next practice. What were the most important insights for you from this session? How do you envision these insights informing your work as a counsellor in training? As the last part of your response, post a summary on the process of your group in the last session (i.e., energy levels of the group, ease of skills, your experience with receiving feedback, giving peer feedback, etc). Post answer here:  One aspect of my skill development that stood out during the second practical application session was that I observed myself becoming more comfortable with utilizing appropriate pauses within the session. In the first session, I recognized a certain discomfort in encouraging the client to disclose more. However, as suggested by Young (2021), it is essential to incorporate moments of silence after responses, as this gives both the client and counselor the opportunity to ponder and consider. I observed that incorporating brief periods of silence not only gave clients space for contemplation but also encouraged them to delve deeper into their emotions (Shebib, 2020). I realized that by interspersing the discourse with pauses, I was giving enough time to the client to reflect and add more to what they were saying. This could also be empowering for the client, as they gain greater control over their own disclosure. At the same time, this also helped me recognize specific instances, where the client was struggling, so I could interject with more meaningful questions to help them explore specific areas of their life where more work was required. In particular, I recognized that when the client’s responses elicit intense emotions, it is crucial to allocate additional time for them to process and absorb what was discussed (Young, 2021). Upon reflection of my involvement in the second PAS, I have come to understand that I find it difficult to acknowledge my positive qualities. Though I try to remain objective in my reflection, it is a force of habit to identify weaknesses instead of also acknowledging my strengths. Interestingly, while I welcome suggestions for improvement in feedback, receiving compliments can make me feel uneasy. In fact, instructor feedback on my first PAS came as a surprise, because I could identify a lot of weaknesses and few strengths. Therefore, one aspect I am going to work on in the future is this. I intend to engage in more positive self-talk, and be more objective in my reflection, so that I can also identify strengths and build further on them. To achieve this, I intend to reflect rather regularly on my accomplishments and strengths, and reflect on them in context of the various counselling skills I have learned over the past year. I believe that doing so may alleviate the anxiety I currently experience during these practice sessions, while also helping me overcome self-doubt. I also believe that constant self-reflection makes us more aware of the various internal and external forces that mediate our counselling skills and our ability to help people. With this understanding, I believe that continuous self- reflection will increase both my internal and external awareness, leading to an improvement in my counselling skills and overall ability (Yorkville University, 2020).
