Hi Maria, I can relate to your post. I agree that establishing rapport, especially during your first interview, is imperative to the counseling relationship. Explaining confidentiality and all that it entails ensures the client, sets expectations, and builds trust (Hays, 2016). Asking for feedback from the client at this time will also be helpful. I would say plainly, “Do you have any questions at this time?” I must keep in mind that a client-centered approach is my goal. This means that I will be respectful, responsive, and listen attentively (Latawiec et al., 2023). The client should be my focus and anything that I can do to ease the client’s way will promote success. At times I concentrate on one aspect of the counseling process and then forget everything else I learned throughout the program. As you stated, you did not use reflective listening as much as you wanted. You were probably too intent on the questions and covering all the material. It is an excellent idea to practice these skills we are learning in our social circles. Not only was it helpful for me to review my mock interview video, but it was also helpful for me to be a client. Being in the client’s shoes helped me to understand why it is important to use minimal encouragers, a comforting voice tone, and language that will promote a conversation. I agree that it is valuable to use your client’s name during conversation. This makes the client feel valuable and known. I appreciate the information you shared in your post. I can learn from your experiences too. Angie Ellis Word count: 277 References: Hays, P.A. (2016). Conducting a culturally responsive assessment. American Psychological Association, 127-160.
