PS124 Unit 8 Discussion Good evening, everyone. According to Spielman, et al (2020), the first step in studying psychological disorders is to very carefully and consistently determine if any signs and symptoms are present. The current system that is used by mental health professionals is the DSM-5 which includes many categories of disorders and describes them in great detail. It also gives very specific symptoms required for the diagnosis of each disorder. In the research article from the library it indicated that COVID-19 stress could be more distressing than experiencing a war. The restrictions of the lockdown have obstructed peoples lifestyle as well as their ability to provide food for their families (Kakaje, et al. 2021). This was a very difficult time for everyone. People were losing family and friends, they were not able to go out and enjoy life, they were not able to go to work to make a living for themselves and their families. The psychological disorder I have chosen to discuss is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASD is a childhood disorder characterized by deficits in social interactions and communication, and repetitive patterns of either behavior or interests (Spielman, et al. 2020). Children with Autism typically turn their head when being spoken to, they do not initiate social interactions with other children, and they avoid making eye contact. Symptoms necessary for diagnosis of ASD are social communication deficits and restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. Examples of social communication deficits are difficulty making friends and decreased sharing or interests with others (APA. 2021). Examples of restricted interests and repetitive behaviors are difficulty tolerating changes in routine and new experiences and arranging things such as toys in a specific pattern (APA. 2021).
