What information might you provide the family, both the parents and their son? Being that the parents disagree with one another on why their child’s sexuality has derived, I would first get a background of the client’s childhood and the family’s overall history. ACA Code of Ethics references building client- counselor relationships to create trust. After understanding the family’s history and background, as the counselor, it’s important to highlight life changes for children in this age group and their sense of exploration of sexuality. The family should collectively look over the resources that I’ve provided on sexual orientation, mainly those of the LGBTQ community to understand why their son has decided to explore. I also would express that during this time, they should provide a safe place free of judgment for their son to talk to them about these changes he’s experiencing. Their child also needs to know that they’re loved through communication and being attentive towards them. According to planned parenthood, there is no real indication of why someone might be a part of the LGBTQ community. However, research says it could be biological factors that start before birth (Planned Parenthood, 2022). Is sexual orientation created by nature or nurture? Research shows that genes and environmental factors can both be prevalent factors in sexual orientation. I think environmental factors (nurture) are the primary reason individuals are part of the LGBTQ community. In previous courses, we learned how our environment can shape the way we think and act. The nature aspect of sexual orientation would be if they were born that way and the nurture aspect would be learning based on environmental factors and upbringing. In this case, the dad believes it is nature and the mom believes it’s nurture. As counselors, the ACA Code of Ethics tells us to not place our own biases onto our clients. I would keep my opinions to myself about sexual orientation and give the family resources to make their own decisions. I wouldn’t want to do anything unethical resulting in losing my credentials so respecting the client’s values and beliefs would be my number one priority. References: American Counseling Association.
