Gasker (2019) tells us that evaluation is important in the social work field for many reasons. The NASW Code of Ethics requires evaluation based upon the core value of competency, as it measures the validity and success of social work policies, programs, and implementations (Gasker, 2019). Additionally, it helps us to empower our clients to see their successes and achieve self-determination (Gasker, 2019). Lastly, evaluation can legitimize the value of social work to those that may be skeptical (Gasker, 2019). When evaluating an individual, social workers tend to focus on the client and the systems they interact with (school, work, church, community, etc.). Alternatively, when evaluating families, social workers must focus on the family dynamics and how each member not only interacts with one another but with each of their own system, as well.
