ABA 624 - Week 1 Discussion
Distinguish between dependent and independent variables:
Based upon your Pre-Assessment Score, what is your goal and intervention plan to reach competency of the course content?
What is the difference between rate and percentage? Provide a specific example of when it would be better to use rate as compared to percentage.
Provide an example of when it would be good to use IRT.
Based on my Pre-Assessment Score, my goal and intervention plan is to work on my SAFMEDS for at least 45 minutes to 1 hour to increase my competency in the new definitions introduced in this course. I aim to get at least 14 accels in at least one of the 5 SAFMEDS sessions I intend to do from Monday to Friday. The two main variables in an experiment are the independent and dependent variables. An independent variable is a variable that is changed or controlled in a scientific experiment to test the effects on the dependent variable. A dependent variable is tested and measured in a scientific experiment. The dependent variable is 'dependent' on the independent variable. As the experimenter changes the independent variable, the effect on the dependent variable is observed and recorded.
A specific example of when it would be better to use rate as compared to percentage would be seeing how often a client engages in SIB (self-injurious behavior). Over an hour, percentage-wise you could say he/she engaged in SIB for 15 minutes which would be 25% of an hour. At first glance, you would say “Hey 75% of the time, they were not engaged in a SIB” which appears positive. However, during those 15 minutes, he/she may have struck themselves or others over 50+, did property destruction, food stealing, etc. which displays a greater issue with the rate of frequency as opposed to the percentages where the SIB doesn’t take place.
A good example of when to use an IRT (Inter-Response Time) would be to measure how long a child cries/tantrums when denied a preferred item over a 5-minute interval. According to Cooper, such a strategy can be useful in identifying the effects of reinforcement and punishment on behavior. (Cooper et. al., 2020)

HelloFresh and Blue Apron, both meal-kit providers, mail pre-measured ingredients and recipes to its customers so families can enjoy a home-cooked meal without the hassle of planning. The FDA wants to know if the average amount of time between when the meal leaves the packing facility and the time of the delivery of the box to the customer’s doorstep is different between HelloFresh and Blue Apron.
Why is this information important for FDA (and customers) to know?

A researcher is investigating the effectiveness of two weight loss treatments. The number of patients attending Treatment A and Treatment B are 30 and 32 respectively. The patients’ weight losses (in Kg) after a two-month treatment period are recorded and shown in Table 1:

Sleep Late, a large hotel chain, has been using activity-based costing to determine the cost of a night’s stay at their hotels. One of the activities, “Inspection,” occurs after a customer has checked out of a hotel room. Sleep Late inspects every 10th room and has been using “number of rooms inspected” as the cost driver for inspection costs. A significant component of inspection costs is the cost of the supplies used in each inspection Mary Adams, the chief inspector, is wondering whether inspection labor-hours might be a better cost driver for inspection costs. Mary gathers information for weekly inspection costs, rooms inspected, and inspection labor-hours as follows:
Q.Plot the data and regression line for rooms inspected and inspection costs. Plot the data and regression line for inspection labor-hours and inspection costs. Which cost driver of inspection costs would you choose? Explain.

The amount of income spent on housing is an important component of the cost of living. The total costs of housing for homeowners might include mortgage payments, property taxes, and utility costs (water, heat, electricity). An economist selected a sample of 20 homeowners in New England and then calculated these total housing costs as a percent of monthly income, 5 years ago and now. The information is reported below. Is it reasonable to conclude the percent is less now than 5 years ago?
