Lily Vidot John Gaines African American History before 1877 20 August 2015 18th Century Slavery in the North and South Slavery during the 18th century in the North and South became a part of the normal culture. In the North, having a slave was equivalent to having a household maid. In the South, having a slave was equivalent to a machine that did free labor for you. It is during this time, one was able to see the distinct difference in the way of life between the North and the South. The North did not have any economic justification when it comes to their slaves. The North focused more on the industrial side of things more than the agricultural side. Slaves in the North were referred to as domesticated. Slaves performed the duties of servants, …show more content…
The South depended more on the agricultural side than industrial. Due, to the high demand of crops the needs for labor in the south were high. “As more and more cotton lands came under cultivation, especially in Mississippi and Texas, the demand for slaves boomed (Slavery in the North," 2000).” It is said that the plantation system would crash if there was not free labor. Southern slaves had it way worse than those in the North. Southern slaves did not only perform domestic duties but they performed hard labor. This hard labor was considered field work. “The hands are required to be in the cotton field as soon as if is light in the morning (Slavery in the North, 2000).” Southern slaves would work in the fields farming crops like sugar, rice, corn and most importantly cotton. After the invention of the cotton gin, the South’s economy depended on cotton and this caused for an increase need of laborers. Plantation owners forbid slaves from learning to read and write. They did not want slaves to be educated because they wanted them to continue to be their free labor; leaving many slaves in the south uneducated. Slaves endured long days farming especially in the cotton season. They were forbidden literacy and even the right to be free at first. Even the slaves that were able to flee to the North were not safe. After the Fugitive Slave Act was passed, many freed persons were illegally kidnapped and dragged back to work on the plantations in the South. Slavery in the North during the 18th century was not as tough as in the South. Slaves were tasked with domestic duties such as servants, valets and being able to be merchants. Slave owners in the North also taught their slaves how to read and right. Owners even went to the extent of giving their slaves allowance to purchase goods. Though, they are some differences between slavery in the North and South; these slaves endured conditions that one could not
In the 1800s slavery was a major issue in its time. Slavery is described as being held against someone's will;It is being imprisoned and not being able to escape a dark abyss. People that were enslaved were either born into slavery or vended off to plantations workers. There were 2 different labor systems that were the North and the South. The North and South labor system have similarities that they share as well as differences.
In the time period between 1775 and 1830, African Americans start to gain more freedom in the North while the institution of slavery expanded in the South. These changes occurred due to the existence of different point of views. The North did not need slavery and acknowledge the cons of slavery while the South’s want for slavery quickly became a need.
Slavery, in the South and as well in the North, played a huge role of the culture of their societies. The North had a general belief in abolitionism, while the South opposed that idea. All the economic reasons led to the cultural differences. The South viewed slavery as a necessity to their economy. The North believed it was wrong to own a human being. The South contradicted this idea with the North’s use of cheap labor in its factories.
Though the majority of Southerners didn’t own slaves, slaves were used in the South to keep the revenue up, and slavery was very much a part of the agricultural lifestyle.
Slavery is a system in which human beings can be owned by other people and are treated effectively like property in the eyes of the law. Slavery was introduced to the colonies in 1619, at Jamestown, Virginia, where unskilled workers were needed to farm tobacco (“Slavery(Issue)”) . The South needed slaves more due them having a more agricultural lifestyle. However, the North, which was based upon manufacturing and trading and basically no slaves by the time of the Constitution. During that time, indentured servants were more popular due to less expense and danger than the slaves. However, after the invention of Eli Whitney’s cotton gin, which established cotton as a lucrative
During the period of 1830-1860 slavery existed throughout the United States. The topic of slavery has a long history in the United States, beginning with the slaves used to cultivate tobacco in the southern colonies. When writing the Declaration of Independence, the Founding Fathers realized they could not include any articles against slavery, for it would lead to the South not agreeing upon it. In the 1830’s to 1860’s, attitudes towards the institution of slavery varied throughout social classes and regions, ultimately settling with the North coming out against the expansion of slavery and the South for it.
The south for a good while was always fond of using slavery as a cheap source of work. The increase in the number of slaves was when John Rolfe became one of the first to cultivate tobacco in the so called “New World back then in the 17th century. There was good money to be made about the amount of labor that went into the tobacco cultivation was harch, hence why slaves were used. Ever since then, it is obvious to note that slaves dominated the aspect of southern life. Whether that be economically, socially or politically, slaves played an important role in each category.
Slave conditions in the North and South were actually quite similar in most respects except those ideas were usually taken to the extremes in the low-country. Also because the low country was so secluded from everywhere, they were also exempt from legal life meaning there is no one to enforce the few laws the slaves had to protect themselves.
The north and south began with similarities but the increasingly want by the south to implement slavery altered the south and made the differences between them and the North more predominant. They also disagreed on how large the governments role should be and wether the economy should be base don idustry or agriculture. In the North is there were 250,000 blacks out of 19 million. The north was more advanced and wanted an industry based economy with railroads and factories since that is where many of their jobs were. They used machine power and energy as opposed to in the south. Alexis Tocqueville stated that “trade and industry are bound to flourish more in the North than in the South”.[2] In the south, there were eleven million people; four million of which were slaves.[1] They were dependent on man power(slaves/farms) and were highly dependent on slave labor and agriculture. The south is where the largest amount of cotton was produced because of this they wanted a agriculture based economy because cotton became very popular during this time and accounted for half of all
The Northern and Southern United States in the early 1800’s. Despite the United States having the strong unification they had shaped, between 1800 and 1850, it seemed as though the nation would be divided in half. Although the economies in both the North and South were flourishing, there was a good bit of differences between the Northern and Southern states. Some of the most obvious differences between the two dealt with its various climates and natural features, the economy, its social structure, as well as its social attitudes, and daily life. The first difference between the Northern and Southern states is their diverse climates and natural landscape features.
Slavery prospered more in the South than in the North. Many have wondered why this occurred. This happened for several reasons. To begin with, the South needed additional workers to operate their farms and plantations. Another reason they had slaves was to increase the size of their military force. Last but not least, they didn’t feel that African Americans were entitled to human rights. Based on these items, the Northerners did not share the same view on slavery as the Southerners did. Most of the population in the North did not condone slavery. This was partially because they did not have the same agricultural needs. In addition to this, they felt that all races deserved to be treated equally.
The North and South emerged as two distinct regions because they had various differences. These differences included the geography, the economy, and the society and transportation systems during Antebellum. One of the most striking differences between the North and the South was the climate and geography. The North had rocky soil which made farming hard, because of this they turned to trade with things like timber for shipbuilding. The North’s climate had frozen winters and hot/humid summers.
Labor operations employed slave and needed worker more than any other industry. During the antebellum times manufacturing play a supportive role reconstruction and development. Most was processing of raw material and agricultural products. Flour, corn additive and was mostly imported in the manufactory. Slave labor had accompanied by social upheld political notices and contingents as labor operations intensify for slave. Between hundred and sixty thousand to Two hundred thousand 160,000 to 200,000 slave worked in the manufacturing industry, mainly the iron industry rely on skilled slave labors. Black with abuse and unearned capital they made progress through slave poverty was best said by hennery George”. Owner of slave benefits a 100% for their profits allowing them to recover and improve their state and pay their loan and taxes to England. Whites had succeed in greed in every aspect of using a slavery in the south by selling and renting slaves out for their services and skill works and free labor . With poorly pride, slavery owner exercises and didn’t follow or understand the moral foundation of God intended for human being, they force

So many people wanted slaves, especially in the South. They had more farms than they could handle on their own. Northern owners wanted them because they would have to do less work. Very few owners treated their slaves nicely and paid them to do work around the house. They would not be treated like family but would get treated a whole lot better than your “typical slave.” Those kinds of circumstances occurred more in the Northern states than the Southern states.
