By comparing the black and white schools, it is seen that the white schools show that white education was luxurious and the system of the government was unjust to everyone. The author points out that black children continued to the colleges that trained them to be carpenters, farmers, handymen, masons, maids, cooks, and baby nurses which was not the case for the graduating white children. A literary element of tone has been widely employed by the author to pass her message across as well as describe her experiences of the graduation ceremony in the mid nineteen hundreds. The tone is shifted twice in the essay to describe the moods in every part of the essay. It has also been used to describe how people in the graduation reacted to the different events during the graduation ceremony in Stamps. Angelou starts the essay with a very happy and excited tone shown by the sheer anticipation of the graduation ceremony by everyone in the black community. She writes that "The children in Stamps trembled visibly with anticipation. Some adults were excited too, but to be certain, the whole young population had come down with graduation epidemic” (124). This implies that Angelou and her classmates were very thrilled that they were finally graduating and were anxious to exploit what other possibilities life would bring to them. Maya Angelou’s essay is describing her eighth grade graduation and the racism that was prominent at that time. With an explanation of the roles at graduation, she begins excited for her own graduation but as she listens to the speech of a white man, she becomes angered with the racial discrimination that was hinted at in his speech. In the midst of her anger, she regained hope from the black valedictorian’s speech and proudly stated that her race still continued to live happily even with the limited opportunities that were given.

St. Louis is a town in the South, like many others, had inequalities at the time. In 1938 Maya Angelou was only ten years old. At this age, she worked for a lady named Mrs. Viola Cullinan. Maya Angelou wrote briefly about her time spent working for Mrs. Cullinan in her short story “Mary.” Maya Angelou's’ use of vivid, direct characterization and alternating childish voice to mature adult narrative diction filtered through her authentic first person point of view helps to prominently establish the theme of Angelou’s distaste for racial inequality throughout the short story.

For my Argumentative Essay “Modern Day Re-Segregation in Today’s Schools”, I will be addressing Professor Kelly Bradford and my fellow students of Ivy Tech online English Composition 111-54H. As I chose Martin Luther King’s “Letter from A Birmingham Jail” as my core reading topic, I have gained an interest in not only the fight for civil rights that Mr. King lead in the 1950’s but have gotten interested in how there is still a large gap in equality in education due to the current situation of not only educational segregation but social and economic segregation. Through my research I have discovered that not only segregation in the schools is on the rise, but that socioeconomic segregation exists and is fueling the decrease in academic success by impoverished students. Through my writing I want to demonstrate that the socioeconomic isolation and segregation not only affects those that are directly bound by it, but that it affects every American in some form or other. I am submitting my writing as a formal academic manuscript.

Maya Angelou was born April 4, 1928. Her real name is Marguerite Johnson, but she later changed it to Maya. She was born in St. Louis, shortly after her birth her family up and move to Arkansaw. Maya grew up there in the rural parts of Arkansaw, and later married to a South African Freedom Fighter. She lived in Cairo with him, there she began her career as editor of the Arab Observer.
The separation of the African American displays the importance of graduation day. Angelou was only graduating from the eighth grade, but because of the sociocultural differences, graduation proved momentous in their community. Angelou later states “Oh, it was important, all right. White folks would attend the ceremony, and two or three would speak of God and home, and the Southern way of life” (Angelou, 2014, p. 181). The school making a minute event into a grand celebration conveys much about the state of the position African Americans were subjected to. Angelou displays this later when she describes the scene of small children presented in a play about buttercups and daisies and bunny rabbits and older girls preparing snacks and beverages. In this speech there are many emotional appeals which can be expected because she is talking about a very good friend of hers who she no longer has. An epideictic is used to display the qualities of something or in this case some one. Maya Angelou says in her speech “She was a quintessential African-American woman” by saying this Maya displays how highly she thought of Coretta Scott King. Maya has a specific audience who she addresses few times in order to continue to focus on her main topic. Maya used many rhetorical strategies in order to convince others that Coretta Scott King was loved, influential and overall an amazing person.

The children were shaking with excitement due to the impending graduation services. The graduation is the most important thing happening in the town of Stamps, "We even made a sign for the Store....It read
