Controversy over school uniforms is not a newfound issue. Children wearing uniforms dates as far back as 1222. Most parents and students alike agree that they should have to wear uniforms. I agree in that uniforms can help see students see each other through the same eyes, enhance the attendance level, and make preparing for the school upcoming school day easier. Initially, uniforms are likely to lessen the discrimination between the social classes of students. If all students have to wear the same clothes, it would eliminate teasing other pupils through their clothes. In the article, “Should Students Have to Wear School Uniforms?” the author writes, “In a 2013 survey by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and uniform manufacturer Lands’ End, 86% of school leaders said uniform s make ‘a significant, positive impact in peer pressure,’ and 64% said uniforms reduce bullying.” The article also states, “Virginia B.Draa, Assistant Professor of Human Ecology at Youngstown State University, said uniforms can decrease peep pressure and blur class lines between students.” I believe uniforms help peers see each other in a different light, without judging by appearance. …show more content…
The article likewise says, “A 2010 study by researchers at the University of Houston found that the average absence rate for girls in middle and high school decreased by 7% after the introduction to uniforms.” Not only do uniforms result in a higher attendance rate, but they also improve disciplinary actions. “During the first semester of a mandatory uniform program at John Adams Middle School in Albuquerque,NM, discipline referrals dropped from 1,565 during the first semester of the year prior to 405.” When uniforms are mandatory, students are not worried about getting in trouble for their clothes matching dress code
School uniforms do nothing to prevent bullying. Linne Hoofnagle’s article goes on to say that, “If we convince ourselves that placing limits on clothing choices will eliminate school bullying, we are kidding ourselves” (Hoofnagle). The idea that all the harassment that takes place in school is centered around student’s wardrobes is preposterous. If you make students all dress alike the center of the bullying may move to if they have money, the presence or absence of glasses, condition of their skin, height, and weight. School faculty and administration are just looking at the superficial causes of bullying and not looking at the root of the problem. As a result, they are not only punishing the bully by
Having school uniforms greatly decrease one’s way to get bullied. “Perhaps most importantly, a uniform means students don't have to worry about peer pressure when it comes to their clothes. When everyone is dressed the same, worrying about what you look like isn't so important. There is no competition about being dressed in the latest trend, which would put a great deal of financial pressure on students and parents. Potential bullies have one less target for their insults; it's hard to make fun of what someone is wearing when you're dressed exactly the same...” (Should Students Have to Wear School Uniforms?). With the same as gang violence, having uniforms does not get rid of bullying altogether. With my experiences in both non-uniform and uniform enforced schools, I saw far less bullying in schools with uniforms. Most of the bullying incidents I have seen are focused on the kid’s appearance due to clothing. Having the uniforms can help students look at each other in a more equal
School uniforms are a debatable topic that has been going on for years. Fashion has began to overrule schools rather than education. There are quite some people who believe school uniforms should not be enforced, however, many also believe that school uniforms are the best things for students. School uniforms are a great resource and will cause less chaos in schools because they will ensure equality, provide safety to the school, and are cost effective.
Since the 1990s, the practice of having public school students wear uniforms--like their private school peers--has been credited with some amazing results. School uniforms, proponents have said, can lead to improved discipline and classroom behavior, increased school attendance, respect for teachers, better school performance, higher student self-esteem and confidence, lower clothing costs, promotion of group spirit,
Picture this a person has a daily routine to set out their clothes for the next school day. That person had a lot of homework one night and forgot to pick out his or hers and it he or she has slept in and he or she is going to miss the bus soon. If this student had a uniform they would have not miss the bus instead of deciding what to wear. Another scenario of school uniforms is that a student with an low income family can not afford the nice clothes that their peers have and is teased and taunted for it then it is bullying. If schools enforced a uniform code it would decrease bullying by wardrobe because the victim and the bully is wearing the same attire. According to the article titled Should Students Have to Wear School Uniforms had a student
There has always been a big controversy on whether schools should require students to wear uniforms issued by the school. Some believe that students should have the freedom to wear whatever they would like to express themselves. Others believe that students should wear uniforms to reduce bullying and provide a look of success. Schools should be required to have students wear uniforms.
Kids shouldn’t wear uniforms, because they can’t express what kind of style they like. It costs too much for families who already struggle to make ends meet. It violates the right to freedom of speech and expression. To a lot of people uniforms such. Uniform they take away your freedom of expression. Wearing school uniforms are the worst they make schools look bad.
Two years ago, during my junior year in high school, I was asked to write an essay on whether I agree or disagree that uniforms should be required in schools. I automatically disagreed, which made it easy for me to start my essay. I always hated wearing uniform, especially when we went on field trips. It was extremely difficult for anyone to express himself or herself; we needed to dress the way we wanted. When writing the essay, during my third paragraph I had run out of reasons as to why uniforms should not be required. I then realized that disagreeing was not going to work for me; therefore I needed to think of something else. As a result, I used critical thinking by making a list and thinking of positive and negative outcomes uniforms provided.
During every school year, the issue on if school officials should or should not entail students to wear uniforms in school is a constant debate among the parents and staff members in school districts. Just like any other controversial issues, there are two sides to the argument representing both the good and bad points that exist behind student being required to wear uniforms in school. Although it can take students time to adjust to transitioning into the policy of being required to wear uniforms in school when it is first enforced, the benefits that come from them makes it all worth the hassle. Individuals against the idea of students being required to wear uniforms in school, often fail to see the bigger picture at hand. Uniforms help with removing negative situations in schools, along with helping parents save time and money.
Today, many schools around the world enforce uniforms, requiring students to wear specific clothing. School uniforms, which was first established in 16th century England, are a topic of much debate in the public school system of the United States. Many people feel that uniforms reduce competition among students and bring a sense of unity in school. People who are against school uniforms think that they prevent students from expressing themselves and inhibits creativity. Many students dislike school uniforms because uniforms can be viewed as a violation of their rights, while others benefit from uniforms because it relieves the stress of picking what to wear to school. Although school uniforms do have its benefits, they also limit
The implementation of uniforms was to increase student success, and deter bad behavior. Their has yet to be a link that suggest a substantial connection between the school uniform policies and student achievement. The results do not particularly deny or back either side of the uniform argument. The results do nonetheless strongly intimate that uniforms are not the solution to all of American education’s ills. Though this was the initial reason to have students switch to uniforms there is
Opposing arguments say that uniforms are good. They claim that they seem to decrease bullying, dispel distractions, and reduce morning prep-time. For example, Ray Rivera, principal of a K-8 Eastwood Knolls in El Paso, Texas, quotes, “Occurrence of fighting among students was pretty much an everyday event. But last year, we had only two… fights. We don’t have gang and drug problems anymore. It makes it very easy for ‘have-nots’ and ‘haves’ to get along because they all look alike (Cook 2).” As for dispelling distractions. students are having a greater chance of staying to the books because they don’t seem to look at a certain and daring dress or short skirt that other students might wear if it wasn’t for required outfits. Finally, if a kid picks out a uniform for each day, it reduces the time due to not having to decide on what you want to wear.
To illustrate another reason why uniforms should not be implemented in schools is because everyone thinks that uniforms only bring good and no bad, but sadly they are wrong. Uniforms do bring some good, but mainly people are starting to see that uniforms are not getting the right results. Debra Viadero concludes in the article, “Uniform Effects”, “David
Did you know that the U.S. alone spends over $1 billion a year on school uniforms? School uniforms should not be mandatory as they provide several negatives in discussions such as money, bullying, and freedom of expression. (“Should Students Have to Wear School Uniforms?”).
For instance, if schools decided to implement a rule that school uniforms were now mandatory, students would go on a rampage, but it could also reduce the amount of bullying and peer pressure someone may face because of their clothing. Bullying has always been an issue in schools and some of it is due to what the student is wearing. Students may think that it is not that big of an issue, but it is because according to Tucker, a formal dress code could and will make the school a better place to go. Once the students get used to wearing them, there could be a slight chance of of a decrease of bullying because there is no longer any bullying about someone’s outfit. “School uniforms help lessen the burden on parents and teachers and equalize students. "It puts all kids on the same playing field in terms of their appearance. I think it probably gives them a sense of belonging and a feeling of being socially
