The Road to the Revolution began in 1754 when the French were fighting the British over the Ohio River Valley. This war was known as the French and Indian War. It ended in 1763 with Britain being the victors claiming most of the French’s land including the Ohio River Valley. Some of us colonists went to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains and force out the Natives. By doing this, it caused a war called Pontiac’s War. It started in 1763 and ended in 1764 with the British being the victors again. To avoid further wars with the Natives, the British government created the Proclamation of 1763 which banned colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. These wars put Britain in a great debt. In order to get their money back, Parliament …show more content…
These laws were so harsh that the colonists called them the Intolerable Acts. Within this act it stated, the Boston harbor will be closed, the Quartering Act will be strengthened, there will be limited representative governments, and the Royal Governor’s power will increase. The British Government was outraged at what happened at the Boston Tea Party so they called for tough action to make an example of the people of Massachusetts. The colonies reacted by trying the help the colonists in Massachusetts. They donated food and other supplies to the people of Massachusetts. The colonists wanted to stop these acts so the Committee of Correspondence organized a meeting to discuss what to do next. That meeting was known as the First Continental Congress. It took place in September and October of 1774 in Philadelphia. 12 of the 13 colonies sent delegates to the meeting, Georgia was the only one to not send a delegate. The delegates demanded a repeal of the Intolerable Acts, and that the colonies had a right to tax and govern themselves. They also called for the training of militias to stand up to the British soldiers if necessary, as well as a new boycott of British
As the name proposes, the Intolerable Acts were not getting well among the settlements. Prior to the shots were discharged at Lexington and Concord, the provinces made an endeavor to settle the worries and dissatisfactions raised with the Intolerable Acts through open deliberation and discourse. In this manner, the First Continental Congress was called to arrange on September fifth, 1774. 55 provincial delegates, including acclaimed Patriots like John Adams, Samuel Adams, George Washington, and Patrick Henry, from twelve settlements, met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to define an arrangement of activity. Georgia was the main settlement that did not send delegates. Virginia's
The colonists responded to the Coercive Acts of 1774 with resentment, and the act itself stirred thoughts of rebellion amongst the colonies against the British government(Wood, 47). Indignation towards British rule spread throughout the colonies and led to the eventual formation of the First Continental Congress in September 1774 (Wood, 48). With the exception of Georgia, representatives from 12 out of the 13 colonies convened in Philadelphia to discuss their grievances towards Parliament and the King.
The First Continental Congress was called into session in 1774. The Congress did not encourage independence. Instead, they wanted to show England how to fix the wrongs that had been imposed on the colonists. They hoped that this would unify the colonies and grant them a voice in parliament. The congress wrote the Declaration of Rights and Grievances, which consisted of American complaints that they addressed to the King. The delegates stayed loyal to King George III and made it clear that they were anymore for Parliament.
The Intolerable acts were a set of Acts that were set to punish the colonists and for the British to regain STRICT control over the colonists. The Intolerable Act were Acts that the colonists just could NOT telerate. The Acts part of the set were the Boston Port Act, Massachussetts Government Act, Administraition of Justice Act, and the Quebec Act, out of many. The Boston Port Act was caused from the Boston Tea Party. The Boston Port Act made it so no one could enter or exit the the harbor until all of the money spent on the tea thrown overboard was acheived. Many people lost their jobs or became poor because of this. Another Intolerable Act was the massachussetts Government Act. This Act revoked the charter of 1691, which then made Massachussetts a crown colony. The next Intolerable Act was the Administraition of Justice Act. The Administraition of Justice Act made it so that British officials who have been charged for capital offences could go to England or another country for trial. Lastly, the Quebec Act. The Quebec Act removed all the fur trades and territory from Mississipi-Ohio
There were five acts that made up the Intolerable acts. The first was the Boston Port Act. The port of Boston was closed off to any form of trade. This was to make sure that there were no other good that could be purchased other than the British goods. The next act was the Massachusetts Government Act. This changed the government in the colonies. It made it so that you can not elect people for government. The king chose 12 to 36 representatives that he felt should be in a position of government. Another act that was passed was the Quartering Act. It stated that everyone needed to house and quater any British soldiers that were in the colonies. The next act was The Administration of Justice Act. This stated that all British officials were exempt from any criminal punishment, as long as their actions did not go against the kings rules for them. The last act that was passed was the Quebec Act. It was their way of explaining what happened when they tried to get Canada under British rule. The British expected the colonists to break apart and become un-unified. What happened was the colonists because the most unified that they had ever been. The defiance of the colonists against the British was one of the first times that the colonies came together, and were united as a

The coercive acts consisted of 4 laws, the Boston Port Act, the Massachusetts government act, the act for Impartial Administration, and the Quartering Act. The Boston Port act was meant to isolate the colonies and renew British relations with the East India Tea Company. It closed off the port of Boston until the colonists paid off all of the tea that they dumped into the harbor. The Massachusetts government act was meant to increase Britain’s control over the colonial government. This act abolished the charter and created a government run by a man appointed by the King.
The Coercive Acts, also known as the Intolerable Acts, were a series of British measures passed in 1774 designed to punish Massachusetts colonists for the Boston Tea Party. The Intolerable Acts were the cause for the American War for Independence because the colonists felt they were being controlled with the implement of vigorous policies in the American colonies. The Boston Port Act, Massachusetts Government Act, the Act for the Impartial Administration of Justice, the Quebec Act, and the Quartering Act were all passed as a retaliation to the Boston Tea Party and gave colonists the right to react. The Boston Port Act angered the colonists the most, the Act closed the Boston harbor to all shipping until the town had compensated the Dutch East India Company for the destruction of its tea and assured the King of it’s future loyalty.
The First continental congress took place from September 5 through October 26, 1774. Delegates from each colony, except Georgia, met at Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They discussed the current situation with Britain including the Intolerable Acts, which the British Parliament had imposed on Boston as punishment for the Boston Tea Party. The delegate included Patrick Henry, George Washington, John Adams, and John Jay.
Around 200 years ago in 1763, the infamous French and Indian war ended. Colonist thought that after this long lasting war the people would have no worries of war for a while. Until King George, king of Britain, declared the Proclamation of 1763. It declared that the colonist were not to move west of the Appalachian Mountains. It was a rule that the king made to ensure peace and prevent war with the Indians once more. Though the king thought he was ensuring peace, he unknowingly started a revolution that would last eight years and separate the colonies from Great Britain's rule forever.
Then the Boston Massacre came in and ignited a fuse in all of the colonists sprung them madness to all go against the British. Several young, nervous British soldiery shot on a group of angry colonists, clean up 5, and this showed just how tense everything was in the colonies now. In 1773 the colonists struck again and decided to dump a million dollars worth of tea into the ocean and this was later called the Boston Tea Party. Which then caused the British to impose the intolerable routine in 1774, which included the port number, justice deed, new quartering act, and the government act. The port act was the closing of the Boston Seaport until the tea was paid for and the new quartering act was when the colonists had to figure barrack for the British troops and they built them on their own property.
Parliament responded to the actions of the Sons of Liberty by passing the Coercive Acts, which were commonly referred to as the Intolerable Acts by the colonists. The British passed many laws and took very heavy control of Boston. They closed the Boston Harbor until the colonists could pay for the tea they had destroyed, they banned town meetings for the those who spoke against the crown, and perhaps the most “intolerable” new law was the passing of a new Quartering Act (Document 5). At this point the colonists had stopped talking about whether or not the British reign was fair or not. The British had almost taken over the colonies and anger of the patriots was at an all time high. Sooner or later something had to
While under King George’s tyrant rule, the colonists petitioned many grievances such as the unwarranted Quartering and Intolerable Acts. The Quartering Act, required that “officers and soldiers are so quartered…shall be received and furnished with diet, and small beer…”(Document 9) To the colonists, this was an unreasonable act since they were being forced to provide for soldiers and receive no compensation in return. To them, there was absolutely no reason to maintain the British Army in the colonies. Another unjust set of acts placed by Parliament were the Intolerable Acts. Established following the Boston Tea Party, the Intolerable Acts were completely unconstitutional as it deprived colonists of basic rights. As a result of these acts, Boston Harbor was closed down, limiting the colonists’
In response to the events of the Boston Tea Party, the British parliament passed a series of laws called the Intolerable (Coercive) Acts in 1774. These Acts were: the ‘Boston Port Act’, closing down all trade of Massachusetts; the ‘Massachusetts Government Act’, Massachusetts was no longer allowed to govern themselves; the ‘Administration of Justice Act’, any person charged with murder while trying to enforce the law would be tried in England; and the ‘Quartering Act’, allowing British troops to be housed in
The rebellion’s successfulness is a product of the results achieved by those taking a stand. In response to the colonists’ defiant actions, Parliament passed the Intolerable Acts (Wallace 1). The Intolerable Acts included the Boston Port Act. This bill “shut off the city’s sea trade” (“Boston Tea Party”). This act would hold strong until the colony paid its debt to the British East India Company. The Boston Port Act greatly burdened the colony and resulted with the additional twelve colonies sending supplies to Boston in an effort to provide assistance (“The Intolerable Acts”). The Intolerable Acts also included the Massachusetts Government Act. This act declared the government of the colony to be unfit, unqualified and in need of improvement (“The Intolerable Acts”). This rebellion was the first reaction leading to the Revolutionary War. The Revolutionary War began
