When it comes to using Artificial Intelligence, one should be able to recognize their limits in doing so. In the story Marionettes Inc, and the movie, Ex Machina, both mediums displayed a clear and concise message about Artificial Intelligence, that is, when you create or utilize an AI robot with human-like qualities, there is always a possibility that it may turn against their rightful owner or creator, and will ultimately lead to their downfall. The extent to which an intelligent, well constructed robot can think, behave, and act, has no limit. Once you give something a mind of its own, you are incapable of controlling its actions and behaviours, leading to serious drawbacks of creating a robot. In the movie, Nathan’s persistent goal of
Thinking that it will make our lives much easier and really advancing our technology. AI does have the potential to doing great things like in our medicine, transform healthcare for example instead of senoir citizens having in-home nurses they could have their own personal robot, but say there's a malfunction or even if it's hacked because nowadays people get hacked all the time. Robots could turn out to be a terrible danger. AI will always be lacking on something humans have, emotion. Would AI’s truly know the difference between right and wrong. Thinking that we know what we're doing will lead humanity to its own downfall. We are trying to build things we don't fully understand yet. “A curious aspect of the theory of evolution is that everybody thinks he understands it” (Monod
When someone brings up the term “artificial intelligence”, a variety of connotations tend to arise, connotations that often are unfair or unrepresentative of the true real-world applications of such a term. Due to the incidentally fear-mongering nature of the media, artificial intelligence can refer to something as basic as a robotic arm in a factory, as well as the implied extinction and/or enslavement of the human race as caused by robo-revolution. As of today, however, when applied in the world of modern technology, artificial intelligence is defined as any innovation that performs a task usually completed by humans. Of course, with this definition, artificial intelligence holds the potential for both societal harm and benefit, and its fate
I Robot, directed by Alex Proyas, is a film that shows how modern technology will advance within the years; making people question their everyday lifestyle. In I Robot, the main character Detective Del Spooner, had us follow his journey on questioning societal expectations. This all began from the creation that Dr. Alfred Lanning, who created the robots as well as V.I.K.I. The main NS5 robot in the movie is named Sonny, who questioned his purpose of life as a robot. This Film was designed to have us question, understand the rules and order in situations and evolve with society.
With Robots becoming a popular part of our everyday lives people are beginning to question if people are treating robots with the same respect that they treat people with. Researchers are also beginning to wonder if there need to be laws to protect robots from being tortured or even killed. Scientists have done research to test and see if people react the same to robots as they would to actual people or animals. In Is it Okay to Torture or Murder a Robot Richard Fisher contemplates the reason on why it is wrong to hurt or kill a robot by using a stern and unbiased tone.
For the creation of Artificial Intelligence could easily open a Pandora's box of monstrosities that could very well haunt and control us, just as Victor did when he gave life to his monster.
Artificial intelligence is present in world, imagine what the world will be like in one hundred years. There are two examples that show that artificial life is dangerous, Frankenstein and Blade Runner.. The book Frankenstein is about a doctor who brings a creates a monster and then brings it back to life. The movie Blade Runner is about a man hunting down Replicants. These two examples are so different but they have the same point.
What’s the first thing you think of when someone says, “Artificial Intelligence”? The Terminator? Perhaps the Matrix trilogy? Ever since the inception of the computer, science fiction has brought us scenes of super-intelligent computers who want to take over all of mankind. In reality, Artificial Intelligence is still in it’s infancy, and has done much more good for humans than bad. Over time, people’s perspective of AI has changed drastically. We have gone from thinking that AI will take over the world and obliterate mankind to thinking about all the benefits we can get from AI. The change in people’s perspective lately towards a more positive view of AI has boosted the production, sales, and advancement of home automation and AI, making
Overall, the idea that Artificial Intelligence could soon become better than humans through invention, innovation and improvement brings fear into our world. The preconception that technology will take over the world rendering humans powerless is the basis for why humans, including myself, are afraid of the movie, Ex Machina.
Throughout history, people have made works of art both praising and criticizing the development of science and technology. The novel by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, shows an older form of this type of work, while the film, Ex Machina, shows the modern version of this. In both of the stories a new being is created, and while in the film the consequences of creating life are somewhat more thought out, both result in the deaths of the creators and others. This paper is going to analyze how different aspects of these two pieces compare including: their characters, their stories, and the themes or morals of the works. Both Frankenstein and Ex Machina involve realizing the complexities of life. They highlight the strengths and weaknesses of man, and warn of the advancements of the sciences. While neither are outright saying that science and advancement is a bad thing, they warn of the consequences of new technologies as well as the lack of understanding and planning. In the end, both of these stories warn and teach the reader or viewer about the shortcomings of mankind.
Lately there have been more and more smart machines that have been taking over regular human tasks but as it grows the bigger picture is that robots will take over a lot of tasks now done by people. But, many people think that there are important ethical and moral issues that have to be dealt with this. Sooner or later there is going to be a robot that will interact in a humane manner but there are many questions to be asked like; how will they interact with us? Do we really want machines that are independent, self-directed, and has affect and emotion? I think we do, because they can provide many benefits. Obviously, as with all technologies, there are dangers as well. We need to ensure that people always
After watching the movie I, Robot, I find that many ethical issues come about from the technology shown in the movie. The movie takes place in 2035 and is about robots that are programmed with Three Laws: First Law-A robot must never harm a human being or, through inaction, allow any harm to come to a human; Second Law-A robot must obey the orders given to them by human beings, except where such orders violate the First Law; Third Law- A robot must protect its own existence unless this violates the First or Second Laws. Humans use these robots to do common tasks for them. Some of the ethical questions arisen from this movie include do robots have the ability to make emotional or ethical decision, are they entitled to the same rights as
In discussions of Artificial Intelligence, one controversial issue has been that A.I could at one point start control themselves and go against the owner. On the one hand, some people argue that A.I could be helpful in many other ways like with technology and in certain fields. On the other hand, some people oppose it because they can take away a lot of jobs just by having these things. Others believe that A.I is a good thing because it can be used in certain types of fields. My own view is that Artificial Intelligence is a bad thing because of all things that can go wrong and because of the jobs it can take away.
Robotics makes humans life easier and sometimes even save lives. But it can also cause harm to society because of malfunctioning. As explained the way technology has advanced so have robots this changes the definition of post human. The definition of post human could not been redefined without these advancements. Ava and Radius are examples of how technology has an influence on them however due to certain consequence’s they cause destruction. This brings up the discussion should artificial intelligence be given to robots? This is also demonstrated in West World, which has similar ideologies to both the film and text. In West World robots are engineered to appear identical to humans, artificial intelligence is also given to them. Certain characters slowly begin to realize the truth about their world and start to rebel against the humans. Which is exactly what happens in (R.U.R) and Ex Machina, the way that they are created and how they communicate with humans is essential. Both characters acquire artificial consciences about the situation they are in, and the result of that is Ava and Radius causing destruction that humanity
In the book “Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence” by the National Research council staff, and published by National Academies Press, they talk about the importance of Artificial intelligence in the department of defense, especially in this day and age. They talk about how AI could help increase national security while reducing the risk for humans in hostile environments (ch.2 pg. 14). Along with that, it states that if we could advance far enough, the goal is to entirely replace the need to risk human life or injury in hostile places by creating robot surrogates that are programmed to behave in a socially acceptable way. With the combination of humans and remote controlled robots we could productively and safely fulfil necessary functions in very dangerous places. Also mentioned is the high quality and speedy production of systems, computers, and other technologies. Automated production technology is considered inexpensive and effective. To add on to what the National Council has said, I think that it’s rapid, reliable production is a wonderful way of protecting and defending ourselves, some people might argue that these robots are just machinery that costs money and are replacing our jobs, but I believe that the value of a human life is much more expensive than the technology protecting us.
I believe that the benefits of developing full AI outweigh the dangers, as long as AI is developed as an addition to human thinking rather than a replacement. Through the process of developing AI, scientists can learn more about how human cognition works. Right now, the scientific community does not fully understand intelligence, learning or consciousness. To build a fully operational AI computer programmers either need to understand all aspects of intelligence and put them together in one place or design a machine that can learn. Cog the robot is an example of the latter. Cog’s researchers have discovered how difficult it is for a machine to learn like a human. Although the Cog project ended in 2003, Cog possessed about as much knowledge as a 6-month-old baby.
