Why should our elementary school children study history?
There is no doubt that the primary purpose of schooling is to prepare students to function effectively in the world, and thereby to assist society to function effectively as well. We study the past in school not because students need to know a collection of old facts, but because history helps them understand how the world works and how human beings behave. Knowledge of the past is required for understanding present realities. When people share some common knowledge of history, they can discuss their understandings with one another.

The Malaysian History Colloquium saw the gathering of national historians, and war and police veterans from the colonial period to affirm the country’s history to 500 students from institutions of higher learning, youth groups, NGOs and the youth wings of Barisan Nasional.
The colloquium was also meant to correct the misconception of the Malayan Communist Party being freedom fighters.
“Those who are confused were invited to listen for themselves about the experiences of those who risked their lives to defend the nation from colonisation and communist threats during the Emergency, so that the future generation could enjoy a better life,” said the Colloquium’s Secretariat Committeemember, Profesor Dr Nordin Hussin.
The colloquium was also held in appreciation of the past generation’s suffering and the physical and mental torture they had to undergo due to economic and social oppression from communist ideologies, hesaid.
Prof Nordin, who is head of the Centre for History, Political and Strategy Research of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, said the colloquium was divided into two sessions –- “The Challenges to the Struggle for Independence” and “The Importance of History in the Development of aNation.”

“Keep Memory Alive” is an award acceptance speech delivered by Elie Wiesel. The speaker recalled the events and personal experiences during the unfortunate and penetrating event known as the Holocaust. Wiesel gave an example of a little young boy asking his father: “Who would allow such crimes to be committed? How could the world remain silent?” (Wiesel, 544). That young boy turns out to be Wiesel. Wiesel proceeds to emphasize his belief that everyone should remember the significant events in history and learn to speak up when necessary. People can learn a lot of things from the past. As time go though the past gives us a lesson to learn. History is one of the important element that taught and inspire people to do great thing compare to the past. History taught us beliefs, values, and different traditions of a culture, even architecture had an influence by the past project. From the very beginning of architecture, people started to build a little tent using branch and stone. After that people start to build column to support the building. History is a remarkable subject that offers and eagles eye view into the past. With textbooks such as, Hist3, a great deal of interesting information can be acquired. However, a common misconception runs rampant through students minds; the idealism that history is useless and that the subject is that of a drag. Who can blame them? Some would say society around the world as a whole has evolved into a self-serving society. Through teaching the historical events of the ancestors this may help curtail the negative attitude that is running rampant today. It is vitality important that we have scholars who will continue researching and documenting history.
Today, there are many things that are important in life. We should know how to solve equations, speak at least one world language, such as English or Spanish, and know at least some history, like what happened during the Great Depression and what caused it. Many people just memorize the facts to pass the tests and then shove the facts into the back of their memory to eventually be forgotten. At the time this idea seems good because we won’t use this information in the future, right? Wrong, knowing what happened in the past is actually just as important as what is going on today and what will happen in the future.
