Isabella Aubuchon January 24, 2017 4th hour Cell Phones Should Be Allowed In The Classroom According to David Raths, “Twenty-four percent of K-12 schools ban cell phones altogether, and 62 percent allow phones on school grounds but ban them in the classroom.” A communication tool that has become part of our everyday lives, creating a sort of dependence, is limited or banned for most K-12 students. For a population that always has access, limiting this connection seems backwards. Cell phones have changed everyone 's life in one way or another. From how they communicate to how they learn in the classroom. Students should be allowed to use their cellphones in class because it would cut down money spent on computers, allow students to use …show more content…
Allowing students to use their devices in the classroom can help with practical needs. For example if there was an emergency, they could pick up their phone and alert the authorities. According to 10 Advantages to Allowing Kids to Have Cell Phones in Schools, “If there is an emergency at school that would require calling the police, fire or ambulance services the response time is much shorter for an observing student to use their cell phone rather than finding one at the school.” This would make it much easier in the case of an emergency. Rather than students rushing to find a telephone to use, they can just pull it out of their pocket. Also, “Cell phones can let students look up things they don 't understand…” (Can cellphones be educational tools). If students are having a hard time understanding a word that a teacher keeps saying, they can look it up. If students are stuck on a math problem and need a calculator, they can use the one on their phone. The resources are endless. Lastly, Meg Ormiston said “In another classroom the students had think about the time period that Andrew Johnson was in office and text something into the wiffiti screen that would have been something he would have tweeted back then. I love this example, talk about engaging students.” This is a great way to get students involved and get their brain thinking a processing information. Without devices, the students would have to sit there reading a book,
There are a few ways that technology could be used more in school one is allowing students to use their phones in class. This will not only give us some type of leeway but always playing an educational game with the class (Kahoot) is more fun and engaging than getting an assignment every day and its boring. This also helps us have fun and learn more about our lesion especially if we have to memorize things. Things like spelling, grammar, parts of speech and geography are hard to remember especially if we were completely bored while learn it. This gives the teacher more time to think of assignments and frees up a little class time so we can only focus on problem solving, critical thinking and character development. Although schools are sometimes against devices in school because it could be sometimes a major distraction than a learning tool. I believe implementing phones into school is a way to not only help with learning but to also get connected with students. Being mindful and aware o what keeps your class flowing is the best way to teach.
Many teachers believe that cell phones don’t belong in a classroom because there are several disadvantages. An example maybe a student who uses a cell phone in class has no intension in listening or paying attention to the teacher. This student has a short attention span who cares about socializing more than his/her education. Cell phones can be very disruptive; they can invade people’s privacy and can also be used as harassment or bullying. The usage of cell phones is creating a huge problem particularly when they are used in school.
Many places in society are setting policies on digital device. The principal at my school has also set policies on banning cell phones in school. Students should not be permitted to use cell phones in school. Using cell phones during school allows students to cheat. Students will be more distracted by cell phones and pay less attention to the teacher and to the lesson. Students have a higher chance of getting in trouble if they use cell phones in school rather than if they are not allowed to use digital devices in school.
I have heard of the rule that there are no cell phones permissible during school hours. I know that is a significant rule, but we should have exceptions sometimes. There may be an emergency, and we can't get to the school phones. So instead of using the school phones, we can use our cell phones. A lot of people use their cell phones at work so why shouldn't we be able to use them at school? I'm not saying we should be able to use them while we're working on school work, but during free time and if we don't have anything to do during advanced studies, we should be able to communicate with people. I mean, if teachers can use them, why can't students use them? If a teacher's cell phone rings, they have to stop what they're doing and answer
Lastly, student cell phones detract from the overall learning environment. With all of the disruptions and distractions, so much time would be taken away from the classroom that no sufficient time would be spent actually learning, transforming educators into babysitters and causing the students to be under prepared to competing in
“Cell phones are owned by 91% of American adults, and now they’re becoming a disruption” (Ballaro et al). Cell phones are now trying to get their way around schools. There is some controversy between school officials and children about bringing their phone to school or not. Parents are also a part of the debate. School officials are even becoming a little peevish when students have them out during class. No one has ever thought that this would have become a big issue with schools around the world. Schools have mandated a ban for no cell phones. Using cell phones now has brought on many more disadvantages than advantages. It’s superfluous that children should have cell phones in school. Children can take pictures when they’re not supposed to, can distract kids while they’re learning or from learning, and can make the school unsafe for everyone when there is an emergency while using cell phones in school.
Cellphones are a part of everyone life for most people in the United States. That is especially true for young people. Either way, no one knows just how many schools don’t allow students from using phones in the classroom or from bringing them to school. But we do know that bans like these are common-and for good reasons. It helps both students and teachers. Why, then, are cellphone bans still controversial? All schools, cellphones should not belong in the classroom because it is the action that makes the students stay away from studying. This issue should be put to rest once and for all.
One of the biggest reasons that students should be allowed to bring phones to school is because they can be used as learning utensils. In this quickly advancing world, the most convenient way to access relevant facts news sources is through the internet. This is seen in Source A when Amber Schaefer says, “We need to stop pushing against technology, the more we push back, the more we separate ourselves from our students. It is time to incorporate and collaborate instead of ban and punish.” This basically means that if teachers are willing to accept the use of phones in the classroom and are willing to become better acquainted with technology, teachers and
Most people see students having their phone as a bad idea but most of them don't see the learning benefits in phones. Phones have many useful tools that kids can use like a dictionary, which can help them find the definition of words if they need to (Leyden). Another tool is they could read eBooks, which can be cheaper than normal books (Leyden). Another tool they could use is a translator. This would be useful if a student needed something and the teacher did not speak the same language as the student. Another advantage of having a phone in class could be a calculator. This could also save the school money because they would not have to buy as many calculators. Thirty-nine percent of middle school students use smartphones for homework; only six percent report that they can use the smartphone in classroom for schoolwork. Although Thirty-one percent say, they use a tablet for
Over the past few years the popularity of cell phones among teenagers has grown and this raises the question for whether or not cell phones should be allowed in classrooms. Cell phones have improved so much in their overall functions and technology over the time that an average cell phone can almost work as great as a computer. In today’s society cell phones aren’t only used make phone calls and send text messages, instead cell phones are used for GPS, social media, cameras, Internet, organization, and much more. Cell phones are around us all the time, especially teenagers and there have been several debates of whether or not cell phones should or should not be allowed in classrooms. Cell phones allow students to become organized and productive and even help parents feel a sense of safety. Cell phones not only make learning in classrooms faster and easier but make learning fun and engaging for students.
You are sitting in class and your teacher hands you an assignment. You’re sitting there trying to be productive and get your work done, but there are too many distractions. Have you ever wished that if you could have your phone to block out all the noises things will go a lot easier? Most students at this age have a phone on them at all times, but this could be seen as a hindrance and distraction in class. Although some people believe cell phones could have its benefits. It’s true that allowing students to use their phones in class could be distracting. Nevertheless, we should implement the ability to use cell phones in class. Furthermore granting students the liberty to use their smartphones as a tool. Thus we should allow smartphones because of the resourcefulness and reliability of smartphones. Accordingly students may show more productivity. This privilege also allows students to communicate with others in school for school
Many schools use cellular devices for classroom tool. They can be both a good, and bad classroom tool. Students should be monitored when using an cellphone in class because of the things like websites, and social media that are in the world today. These things could get students in trouble, sometimes the school could be blamed for the students behavior in class. Other times they would be very helpful to students and to teachers. Many teachers like using online games, and interactive games to engage students in the curriculum he/she is taking. Cell phone use in the classroom could come to be a great deal of help to a teacher. Due to those who do not own wifi. Students could use their cellular device to complete tasks like homework, classwork, or extracurricular activities. Many students would use their privilege of using a cellular device in class correctly, as others may not. This can be prevented by an app or program that students should be
Cell phones! They are a great way to share information. I believe that cell phone use in class should be allowed. Before you think that I am crazy or close off your mind think of how they can greatly improve interaction in class. Some teachers are a bit apprehensive about allowing the use of a phone during their lesson, but cell phone use opens a door to being able to share the information we receive in class and makes the information more accessible to students at home. Cell phones are a great way to involve the students in the lesson, there are a great deal of apps that students can use to interact with the lesson of the day. The kids today were raised in generation of technology and cell phones are a handheld computer. Kids don’t store long term information anymore we access data. Kids do not have perfect recall.
When many hear about the use of cellphones and /or electronic devices being used in the classroom, they are quick to abject to how an awful idea it would be. But stop for a second and think about how different schools would be if they allowed the privelege of cellphone and/or other electronic device use. Schools should allow the use of a cellphone and/or electronic device in the classroom for educational purposes rather than sticking to the traditional paper and pencil because, the enviroment will benefit from the reduced number of paper we would use, the technology is always advancing and so should we, and we have all the resources that we could possibly need to learn in our hands.
“Ding!” A phone just went off during the teacher’s lesson. The teacher looks around the room, searching for the culprit. The students frantically check their phones to make sure the disruption was not their fault. If the teacher finds the student who forgot to turn their phone on silent, the teacher will have to spend roughly five more minutes taking care of punishments and getting the class back on topic. If cell phones had been completely outlawed in the school, the teacher would not have had to cram in the rest of her lesson during the end of class. This is one of many reasons I believe cell phones should not be allowed in schools. Cell phones have allowed bullying in schools to spread. Besides being a distraction to students, allowing cell phones in schools creates a division among students based on who has or lacks a cell phone. Imagine never having the opportunity to have a cell phone, but being forced to see other students laugh at their friend’s post on social media. Cell phones promote bullying, are distracting, and are making kids without cell phones feel excluded.
