In the novel, the Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen does whatever it takes to survive in the Hunger Games. Katniss battles against twenty-three other children from the twelve districts along with hunger, cold, and sickness to stay alive in the games. Katniss must use many of her attributes to win the Hunger Games, such as her resourcefulness, caring, and determination. Katniss’s resourcefulness allows her survive in the wild and is the main factor that makes her win the Hunger Games. After Prim’s name was pulled for the Reaping, Katniss volunteers to take Prim’s place as female tribute for District 12. The text states,“I reach her just as she is about to mount the steps. With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me.‘I volunteer!’ I gasp. ‘I volunteer as tribute!” Katniss’s actions show the caring in her heart when she takes her sister Prim’s place as tribute. That was no small action because as she says later in the story, a tribute in District 12 is the same as a corpse, yet she still takes Prim’s place. Shortly after Rue and Katniss team up, Katniss gives Rue the majority of the food they are eating, and offers to help her set snares. In the text it says,“I’ll bet meat hardly ever comes her way.‘Take the other...Take whatever you want. Now that I’ve got a bow and arrows, I can get more. Plus I’ve got snares. I can show you how to set them.” This shows that Katniss is a caring person because she gives Rue most of her food. Although Katniss doesn’t even know if she can trust Rue, she teams up with her and protects her. Katniss Everdeen is the protagonist in the novel, The Hunger Games. This proves that she has an ongoing development through the story, as she topples over obstacles and circumstances that led her to new perspectives. For example, she changes through the influence of her experience in the Capitol and in the arena of the Hunger Games. In the beginning of the story, Katniss is portrayed as a bland and uninvolving character, as she is trapped under the weight of her district; never thinking outside of the world.
Katniss’s injuries by chewing up leaves and appling it on her wound, while Katniss shared some of her food from her bag. They worked together and developed a strong relationship due to the conflict of the game and that they shared the same adversary against the Careers. Their plan was to sabotage the Careers food source so Katniss decided to destroy the Career’s food source by baiting them into the forest set by Rue. After the Careers went after the smoke caused by the campfire, Katniss realized that the path is full of landmines. Smartly, she was able to shoot open the bag when an apple fell and activated the landmine, destroying all the food supply. Eventually, Rue was killed by the Careers as she successfully baited them into the campfire. (pg 221) Moreover, this friendship that Katniss developed with Rue had actually saved Katniss’s life from Clove later into the story.

Cinna designed memorable dresses to help Katniss in the Games, but he also supports, encourages, reforms problems for her, and indicates his confidence in her.

In the hunger games, survival is the key to living in all aspects. The contestants have to find their own resources as without food, water, shelter, or even an alliance survival is nearly impossible. Due to Katniss living in a poor district and having to fend for herself by gathering herbs and killing animals for food, she is the perfect description of a survivor. Though she has been taught how to survive by her father, in the arena she learns that creating an alliance with Rue was the difference between life and death in The Hunger Game. In one scenario for instance, Katniss was trapped in a tree by another tribute and was saved by Rue.
