Sam Overman Mrs. Drayton English 1 2A 9 February 2016 Kyle Carpenter “Hero of the Ages” “Blessed be the LORD my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle”~ Psalm 144. On October 17, 1989 in Jackson, Mississippi, an American Hero was born, his name is William “Kyle” Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at age 19 in February 2009 and completed boot camp in July 2009. Kyle Carpenter should be the Hero of the Ages because he jumped on a grenade, he also encourages people, and is an ambassador of sorts for the United States Marine Corps and its wounded warriors. A U.S Marine Corporal shielded a team of “Devil dogs” from a hand grenade. According to the New York Times U.S. Marine, Carpenter threw his body on a grenade to shield his fellow “Devil dogs” in 2010 in Afghanistan. Hand grenades are one of the most awful weapons of war. (www.thewhitehouse.gov). When you jump on a grenade you are not a regular person anymore you are brave, a hero, and very loyal to your men that you would give your life to save other people from a explosive. According to the New York Times, on Thursday June 19, 2014, Carpenter was recognized for being brave and being selfless. His bravery allowed him to be awarded the Medal Of Honor. The Medal Of Honor is the highest military honor. Awarded for personal acts of valor and going above and beyond the call of duty. The evidence given above proves that Carpenter is humble, brave, very loyal to his men,and a hero.
While on active duty, Chris served as a Navy Seal, in a special forces unit primarily as a Scout Sniper. Chris was a highly decorated special forces operator with top secret clearance, who served 4 combat deployment to Iraq and is credited as the deadliest sniper in American history, with 160 confirmed kills. His exposure to combat has come from fighting in some of the major battles of the war in Iraq, in where he experienced the loss of fellow service members
“I didn’t do anything special, but if the progress I have made motivates another wounded veteran to keep going, then that’s great” (Fiege). Eugene Segers is a soldier that lost his leg in Afghanistan. He got home and got the treatment he needed, but he never stopped moving forward. He was determined, he did not stop doing things because he only had one leg. Now he is a hero because he is inspiring people to let nothing stop them no matter what happens. Also, Segers has the characteristics, leadership, and bravery. He is a leader because he is setting a good example for others that are going through rough times like him. He is brave enough to keep moving forward after going through all this pain. Since heroes need to face the challenges ahead of them, they have to have leadership, bravery, and kindness.
Instead, he put himself in harms way in order to not only accomplish the mission, but to ensure that the few Marines he still had fighting would not be over run. Non Commissioned Officers are called on daily to put the needs of the Marines under their charge above their own. As we move on to more recent examples of exemplary NCOs, one would be remiss to not remember Cpl Jason Dunham. Cpl Dunham was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Iraq in 2004. Again, no better justice can be done than to read his citation. "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as Rifle Squad Leader, 4th Platoon, Company K, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines (Reinforced), Regimental Combat Team 7, First Marine Division (Reinforced), on 14 April 2004. Corporal Dunham's squad was conducting a reconnaissance mission in the town of Karabilah, Iraq, when they heard rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire erupt approximately two kilometers to the west. Corporal Dunham led his Combined Anti-Armor Team towards the engagement to provide
As he was being placed into a body bag, he spit in the doctor’s face. He was then sent to surgery. Master Sergeant Benavidez’s commanding officer awarded him with the Distinguished Service Cross. The commander awarded this to him as he presumed Roy would die before being awarded the Medal of Honor. Amazingly, he survived the procedures and was placed in the appropriate care.
During his last year of service with the Marines, Christopher Lee Boyd was sent to Iraq. Boyd was a driver in the fourth combat engineer battalion. In Iraq, Boyd’s unit swept for land mines and escorted convoys. When
The medal of honor recipient that I am writing about is Henry Johnson. His military rank was private and his service was in World War I in the U.S. Army. He was born in Alexandria, Virginia and received his Medal of Honor in 1918. In the army, Johnson risked his life beyond the call of duty. He served as a member of Company C, the 369th Infantry Regiment, the 93d Infantry Division, and the American Expeditionary Forces. On May 15, 1918, he did combat operations against the enemy on the front of the lines of the Western Front in France. Private Johnson and some other soldiers one day woke up early in the morning to go on sentry duty at the forward outpost then they received surprise attacks from at least twelve German soldiers. When Johnson
Many people have been born that have struck a chord with the world. Some people have become legends, patriots and even heroes. Though one person stood out among the rest, this one was not made a hero, but was born to be one. He was a hero at what he strived to be in life and he has captured the attention of the public like no other solider has done before or since. This great Canadian Air Force Ace became one of the legendary figures in 20th century air warfare. With his daring and dramatic dogfights in France, he achieved a record of 72 kills in his many encounters. His role on the ground during the Second World War training pilots changed and inspired a whole new generation of fighter pilots. This man is known
The word hero describes a person who is confident, brave, and determined. A person who dedicates their lives to others and are renowned for their outstanding achievements. Their actions improve the world and people around them. Chris Kyle possessed all the qualities of a hero: he was selfless, influential, and willing to do anything for the benefit of others.
In the German counter-attack, then-Gunnery Sergeant Ernest A. Janson—who was serving under the name Charles Hoffman—repelled an advance of 12 German soldiers, killing two with his bayonet before the others fled; for this action he became the first Marine to receive the Medal of Honor in World War I. Also cited for advancing through enemy fire during the counter-attack was then-Gunner Henry Hulbert.[12]
Christopher McCandless, A nutcase to some, but a hero to others. But what exactly was he? I personally see Chris as a Hero. Christopher Mccandless a small town kid born into an east coast rich family, who graduated from one of the best universities in america and had a bright future ahead, yet wasn't satisfied. He didn't know the truth to his own existence, Therefore, He abandoned everything and just left. He was ready to give up everything he had worked for, every opportunity he had in life. He sacrificed everything to find his true being within. Chris went on a 2 year long journey all throughout the west coast town hopping, meeting new people. Inspiring them to change. All to which was leading up for his final test of Man vs. Self. He
Chris Kyle served as a Navy SEAL in 4 visits in the latest Iraq war. For his coarseness and military capacities, he was respected a rate of the most paramount recompenses in the US military diverse times including the Bronze and Silver Star.
The first sentence of Audie Murphy’s biography reads, “Audie Leon Murphy was a legend in his own time” (“Sergeant Audie Murphy Award,” 2015), a seemingly fitting introduction for one of the bravest combat soldiers in our nation’s history. Never the less, I believe it simply does not do him the justice he earned. Audie Murphy was not just a legend in his own time; he is a legend today, and remains a legend of the future. Many people recognize his famed name and know him to be a war hero. Nevertheless, most are not fully educated on the “legend” that was, is, and always will be Audie Murphy. I, for one, intend to portray this American hero’s story to as many people as possible. Audie Leon Murphy set the standard of what battlefield courage
I believe Dorie Miller deserved the Congressional Medal of Honor. It is important to look at his actions during the Japanese Pearl Harbor attack to illustrate that he met the requirements of the honor.
Next, Marco and his squad went into one of the houses to kill the insurgents. They cleared the house. Behind that house was a guesthouse. There were five terrorists in the guesthouse. There were a few palm trees too. Marco ran behind one of the palm trees for cover. The other marines of his squad were behind a narrow wall. Marco found a RPG on his way running for cover behind the palm tree. He picked it up and tried to fire it at the enemy, but the RPG didn’t work. Marco then figured out the RPG had a dual trigger system. He figured it out, and fired it. Marco killed the insurgents and earned the Navy Cross.
On the battlefield in Afghanistan, Lt. Cmdr Gennari, who is a navy nurse, saw an injured marine with a live Rocket Propelled Grenade stuck in his leg. When the marine arrived at the medical station, a surgeon told Lt. Cmdr Gennari that a bomb squad would remove the RPG. Lt. Cmdr Gennari went up to the marine and grabbed his hand, saying “I promise you, no matter what, I won’t leave you till that thing is out of your leg”. Lt. Cmdr Gennari gave the soldier a sedative so the explosive specialist could attempt to pull the RPG out of the soldier’s leg. After the extraction of the RPG, Lt. Cmdr Gennari kept the marine alive by pumping a manual respirator after a power failure on a helicopter flight to another camp for more treatment. Lt. Cmdr Gennari was awarded the bronze star for his heroic actions. Lt. Cmdr Gennari’s willingness to put the needs of others in front of his own showed the selflessness and courage of a true hero. Also, If Lt. Cmdr Gennari hadn’t been at the camp when the marine arrived, there is a good chance that the marine might have
