However, no proof has suggested that marijuana has promoted users to feel the need for other drugs. As for the rest of the population, those who do believe in the legalization of marijuana, give reasons such as medical use for relieving people of their pain that can become so agonizing. Research has been conducted to strengthen this claim, proving that medical marijuana has helped people live their life free of pain. The decision whether to legalize marijuana, the third most popular drug in America is still a very debatable issue today. Some supporting arguments for legalizing marijuana include that the drug is not any more harmful than alcohol or tobacco if used in moderation, there are medical benefits of certain use, police and court systems would be freed up, it would create a source of additional tax revenues, the FDA could regulate quality and safety, less people would be subject to lifelong criminal behavior due to arrests associated with marijuana that trap people in the system, and the plant also has several industrial/commercial uses, over 25,000 products can be made from crop. Opposing arguments include that marijuana is a stepping stone/gateway to harder drugs eg. heroin and cocaine, driving and other dangers would increase, and that it would increase the chance of kids gaining access to the drug at an early age (Messerli, 1).

Annually, smoking cigarettes causes more than 480,000 deaths in the United States alone, including 41,000 deaths attributed to secondhand smoke. Smoking can also cause lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, and other potentially deadly diseases (“Smoking & Tobacco Use”). Similarly, alcohol kills 88,000 Americans every year, making it the third preventable cause of death in the United States (“Alcohol Facts and Statistics”). While some evidence suggests that marijuana users are susceptible to developing chronic bronchitis and other respiratory problems, top scientists say that “there is no evidence that smoking marijuana increases the risk for cancers often associated with tobacco use, such as lung and head and neck cancers” (Neighmond). By these statistics, it is easy to see that marijuana carries none of
One can suggest that there will always be a group of people who will use and abuse drugs, and they will simply use what is available to them, whether legally, such as alcohol, or illegally, such as marijuana or more harmful drugs such as heroin. If marijuana were more widely available, it may lead to the decrease of more harmful drugs among the population of addicts. Marijuana has historically been looked upon in a negative light, often labeled a ‘gateway drug,’ or believed to having high addiction rates. However, “most people who use marijuana don’t regularly use other drugs” (Shatkin). Additionally, only about 9% of people who try marijuana become addicted, far less than those who become addicted to nicotine (32%) and heroin (23%) (Shatkin). Currently, 54% of Americans believe marijuana should be legalized across the United States (Society's Changing Views on Cannabis). If marijuana were to become legal, its benefits would be extensive, such as a boost in the economy, and a lowering in crime rates. Additionally, marijuana offers considerable health benefits for many conditions and diseases, including cancer.
