The country of Panem in the novel The Hunger Games is a direct parallel to Nazi Germany in many ways. The Hunger Games is set in a dark dystopian country called Panem. The country is divided into 12 districts, many of which the inhabitants are living in poverty. Panem resembles Nazi Germany in many ways. The harsh dictatorship in which Panem is under is a strong example of this parallel. The president of Panem is meant to represent Adolf Hitler by portraying his inhumane attributes. Each district is meant to choose one boy and one girl to battle to the death, a competition referred to as The Hunger Games. This is a gruesome tradition that serves as a reminder to the citizens who was in charge. The president watches and celebrates the yearly executions of children. He broadcasts this graphic event to keep his people in fear and in silence. The author uses The Hunger Games to represent the genocide of innocent individuals that took place under Hitler’s Nazi regime. The games convey the ruthlessness of the dictator and reminds readers terrible things like this story have happened in the past. The society in which the characters live in allowed for thorough character development. The main character in The Hunger Games is a strong female lead named Katniss Everdeen. She is self-sacrificing and brave when it comes to her friends and family. To protect her sister, she enters the games in which she is likely to die. Her experience and skills allow her to survive the arena to return to her family in district 12. Katniss is overwhelmingly intelligent and uses this to her advantage to outsmart her opponents and eventually the president of Panem.
