In this paper we will be look at the book called “Lying on the Couch”. I will be going over what I saw as the biggest ethical issues that I read about in this book, I will also go over my thoughts on this book and the ethical problems that I saw for Dr. Lash, Carol and Marshal Streider. I will explain my personal opinion regarding self-care and my reasoning as to why it is so important to maintaining clear boundaries. BODY In this book, Dr. Ernest Lash discovers he has a love for psychoanalysis after several years working as a psychopharmacologist. Justin, who has been a patient of Ernest for several years, tells him he left his wife, Carol, for another woman. While Ernest sees this as a good thing since the marriage between Justin and …show more content…
Over all, I found this book to be very interesting. It brought up a lot of the ethical dilemmas we are going to have to deal with in our field of work. Anytime you work with people problems are bound to arise, like in the book when Ernest found himself sexually attracted to his client Carol, what is important is how you deal with them. While I enjoyed reading the book I felt like it abruptly ended in the middle of a lot of the ethical dilemmas. Personally it left me with a lot of unanswered questions such as what ever happened with all of Marshals ethical problems and his wife, and what ever happened with Dr. Seymour Trotter. Let’s look at what some of the ethical concerns are for Dr. Ernest Lash, in this book he faced many ethical dilemmas the first I think is that he doesn’t inform his client that he is extending his boundaries and trying an honesty type of counseling. There are also others such as dealing with Carol’s sexual advances on him, his sexual attraction to her, and when he found out about his supervisors wife cheating on him. Next is Carol while she isn’t a counselor herself she, as all of us do, faced her own personal ethical dilemmas. Some of them are how she would handle the anger over her husband leaving her for another woman, deciding if she is going to try to ruin the career of a man because of her anger, and last is whether to be truthful in the helper/client
Ethical dilemmas exist everywhere around us in everyday situations. Something as simple as picking up a piece of trash off the floor to whether you should use a previously written paper from a separate class for a current assignment in this class. It exists in reality and even on television shows. How, then, do people resolve these ethical dilemmas and how do they defend their decisions? Nurse Jackie is a television series impregnated with ethical dilemmas, especially in medical care. In this paper, I will discuss the ethical issues found in the “Tiny Bubbles” episode of Nurse Jackie. I will further discuss the ethical reasoning with support of ethical principles. In addition, I will discuss how patient’s autonomy and non-maleficence principle of bioethics plays a role in decision making. Overall, there was a difficult struggle on the ethical theory of and utilitarianism, with ethical relativism playing a huge factor.
In this step, it is extremely important for the counselor to see if the situation that the client is facing contains ethics. The counselor must be able to gather all the required information and get more understanding about the problem the client is facing. This can only done by strengthening the relationship with the client, if the client is able to trust you, he/she would be willing to tell you what they are facing. After the client is done describing the problem that they are facing, the counselor

Behind The Bedroom Wall, by Laura E. Williams, is the book that will make you rethink what freedom really is. This book takes place in 1939 with the 13-year-old German girl named Korinna Rehme who is an active member of the local Jungmadel which is a place where children had to learn about Adolf Hitler. Korinna Rehme believes that Hitler is a good man; she listens to him speak about the “Jewish Problem”, and she even has a picture of him in her living room. Korrina agreed with Hitler when he said that the Jews, along with other races, were making Germany weaker. Along with the idea that Jews were making Germany frail, Hitler also states Jews were the reason they lost WWI. Because of this, Korrina believes that she is a loyal German, well, until she finds a Jewish family living in a small, enclosed room in her bedroom wall. Historical events like mistreatment of Jews, Hitler’s reign, and hiding Jewish people are all featured in Behind the Bedroom Wall which makes this novel historically accurate.
In this assignment you will practice what you have learned in chapters 5 and 7 in the Medical Law and Ethics textbook:
The concern for morality and ethics cuts across all endeavors of human existence. Focusing particularly on the helping professions – Pastoral care, Counseling, medicine, Psychiatry, Social Work, Law, and Teaching - the need for standard professional guidelines for conduct of practitioners becomes of paramount importance. Competence or knowledge of techniques of therapy is important; but A person who needs to be salvaged, who needs spiritual, psychological, emotional, psychiatric healing or direction would rather prefer to interact with an ethically seasoned” half trained

In this essay I am going to look at the importance and purpose of the initial consultation between the client and the therapist and what happens during this preliminary session. I will also cover the ethical definitions that will need to be explored and established, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both the client and therapist.
In order to provide holistic, person-centred care, having an understanding of ethics is essential (Kozier et al, 2008). Ethics is concerned
Lying on the Couch by Irvin D. Yalom has been both entertaining and interesting from a counseling standpoint in that it provides a scandalous and as was in most of the cases, a look at what could go wrong if ethics in a clinical counseling setting go awry. Following the characters of Seymour Trotter, Earnest Lash, and Marshal Streider in working with their clients and with each other the ethical lessons to be learned become obviously apparent, if not emotionally painful. Although, numerous issues arise throughout the book, there were at least three that will be covered within the context of this writing. In consideration of each of these ethical breaches there will be dialog on the nature of the ethical issue or violation, where the ACA ethical code applies, ramifications of the ethical issue or violation on both parties, and application of Kitchener?s five primary ethical principles that were involved or violated. In addition, the justification offered by the characters in the book for their actions or considered actions, application to the situation in the setting of Clinical Mental Health counseling, and indication of personal response to the situation presented. Understanding that the use of these ethical principles and considerations as they apply in counseling are unequivocally valuable tools in helping a practitioner in working with clients to make comprehensive decisions that will not create conflict within their ethical parameters and are aligned with the laws

In conclusion, Person introduces two conflicting opinions of the main message, medical ethics. However, there is a bias towards Jenna’s initial view, and the opinions of Lily and Alleys. Clients must be able to trust the counselor and have faith in the therapeutic relationship if growth is to occur. Therefore, the counselor must take care not to threaten the therapeutic relationship nor to leave obligations unfulfilled. When exploring an ethical dilemma, you need to examine the situation and see how each of the above principles may relate to that particular case. At times this alone will clarify the issues enough that the means for resolving the dilemma will become obvious to you. In more complicated cases it is helpful to be able to work through the steps of an ethical decision making model, and to assess which of these moral principles may be in conflict. Ethical Decision Making Model We have incorporated the work of Van Hoose and Paradise (1979), Kitchener (1984), Stadler (1986), Haas and Malouf (1989), Forester-Miller and Rubenstein (1992), and Sileo and Kopala (1993) into a practical, sequential, seven step, ethical decision making model. A description and discussion of the steps follows. 1. Identify the Problem. Gather as much information as you can that will illuminate the situation. In doing so, it is important to be as specific and objective as possible. Writing ideas on paper may help you gain clarity. Outline the facts, separating out innuendos, assumptions, hypotheses, or suspicions. There are several questions you can ask yourself: Is it an ethical, legal, professional, or clinical problem? Is it a combination of more than
