Communicating with Families in Domain 4 is a professional goal I would like to work on to advance my profession as a teacher. This is a goal that I have little to no experience with and feel that I would fall in between the categories of unsatisfactory to basic of this domain. Recently I have the opportunity to be the lead teacher in my practicum class, during this time I had two different parents who came in and volunteered. With my CT being gone it was up to me to answer questions and communicate with the parents. Many times I didn't know how to approach them and relied on the substitute to help me. In fact I felt very uncomfortable because I felt they were critiquing everything I was doing. My CT gave me a few suggestions and tools I can incorporate into my classroom to build a better communication among parents. She encouraged that i create a responsibility report that you feel out each day about how each student behaved that day, then have the student send home the report and encourage them to talk about their day with their parents. Finally the parents will read the remarks and initial that they have read the report. Another idad my CT gave me was creating a classroom Facebook. This is a easy way to send out information about what they class is learning or experimenting with or a source to send out quick reminders. She explained the many times patients don't respond to emails or phonecalls. Even sending home paper reminders she still doesn't know if the papers are receiving the information. I believe that it depends on the job the person has. I think it is fine for someone who is at a job that involves a lot of down time to be on social media sites, as long as when they do actually have something they need to be doing they do it, and not be on social media, or their phone at all during this time. The problem for me is when someone has a job that requires attention and focus. If you are supposed to be doing something, and instead you are playing on your phone, whether it’s on social media, playing a game, or just texting a buddy. In my eyes, these are all unacceptable. I realize sometime things come up where being on the phone is ok, kids get sick or someone needs to contact you for some emergency. The obvious answer to this question is people should only be on the phones when they are on break or lunch, but to me I believe there are other times where it is ok. I don’t think there is an exact answer in minutes to this question. I think if someone is playing on their phones when they are supposed to be doing something else is theft.

In the instance that challenges may arise, I have included an example of a poorly conducted conference that offers commentary on how teachers can handle similar situations.
Unfortunately, as educators we often find ourselves thinking, “there is only some much we can do”. Although educators are with the student’s the majority of their days and can offer guidance and resources to parents, there does come a time that collaboration between the teacher and parent is necessary. The key to a successful collaboration is an open communication with frequent interactions. Meaning, simply greeting parents every
