“Don’t stop when you’re tired. Stop when you’re done.” Author Unknown Being healthy and staying active is not something my family has been worried about. I have to be honest,I thought the same thing before I started wrestling. I ate anything I wanted too, I was not too active. I like to sleep in and play video games. I was out of shape and couldn’t run very far without losing my breath. This all changed when I started to wrestle. Wrestling gave and taught me a new passion. I had a new desire to do more and be better. I had to learn and to sacrifice the things I wanted so I could grow. I had to give up a lot of my favorite treats, soda and food. It was difficult at first; however, the more I did i,t the easier it became. The sacrifices made along the …show more content…
I was eating candy, drinking soda all of the time. Rarely did I eat healthy things such as fruits and veggies. In order to be the best and achieve my goals in wrestling I had to change, I had to eat healthy. I began to believe that I could and would do it...and I did. A change came over me when I started to be more healthy, I felt better, was more active and had more fun with family and friends. In addition to eating healthier was only the beginning. I had to do more and be more active. Each morning my day would begin with getting up and go running, working out. As soon as I began working out and being more active I noticed a difference. I lost 40 lbs and my self confidence went up and I felt better about myself. If a work was missed I felt cheated and wanted to do more. The outdoors and hiking became a passion. Wrestling has taught me to be more aware about what I should eat, how I should act and do. It has taught me self discipline, a sense of self worth, helped me live a better lifestyle. I have made it a personal goal to stay in shape and not go back to my old life style. Due it this new found self confidence I know I can accomplish whatever I set my mind
As I entered my freshman year of year high school, I was very nervous, yet excited to begin deciding my path in life, such as where I wanted to go to college or what job I wanted when I was an adult. At this point, I had some staple skills established, but nothing like I currently have. The year that I decided to try out for the wrestling team, my older brother was a junior at the time and he influenced me to join and said that it was a really fun sport that would help me to grow both physically and mentally. While I hesitated at first, I eventually decided that I would give it a shot. That decision was one of the best decisions I have yet to made. The first practice came, and at the time, it was one of the most
As I got turned onto my back, fighting for my life, the referee’s hand slaps the mat, and my career of wrestling was over. Throughout all the times I worked out and practiced as hard as I could, my only desire for wrestling was to go to states. Knowing I had the potential, my wrestling coach used life lessons to motivate me throughout the obstacles I faced. Although I never went to states, the lessons I’ve learned from the sport apply to any desire I have in life today. Furthermore, I’ve learned that “some desire is necessary to keep life in motion” to accomplish the goals I have in life.
I was first introduced to the actual sport of wrestling when I was in Wisconsin last year. Every year my family and I go to Wisconsin to visit family and friends. One of my cousins Cameron and I started wrestling, he was impressed that I was able to beat him because he had been wrestling for more than nine years and I had never wrestled before. During this school year I was apart of the legacy marching band. That program took up a lot of my time (14 hours a week), now after the marching season was completed I didn't know what to do with all that extra time. I decided to look into doing a winter sport, wrestling was the sport that stood out most to me. Another reason I wanted to be apart of the wrestling team is because my dad wrestled for his high school when he was my age and he said he loved it. Now after being apart of the wrestling team for almost a month now I have learned that I love it too. Because I have developed a love for wrestling I decided I wanted to research more about many different aspects of this amazing
Every individual is brought fourth into this diverse world, declaring this place as his or her home. Each individual, however, inherits from this world his or her own personal being, upon which their experiences, families, beliefs and passions are collected and shaped into this unique individual. We are constantly exposed to our surroundings, which are composed of various elements that influence our actions and motives. Through the presence of my parents, I was able to inherit more that just the common traits, but rather a passion for being active and constantly engaged in physical activity. My dad, a former collegiate wrestler, has always posed as an exceptional example of what it represents to be an athlete. I would listen and observe as he recounts his wrestling career and how he utilizes his successes to prompt himself to exercise & maintain superb health. I was captivated by his well-being and strength in addition to his joy that he received through partaking in exercise.
Without telling a lie, since I was 20 years old, I have been dieting. In my childhood, I was a little bit overweight because I consumed a lot of food. Everybody always informed my mom about my weight, but she did not pay attention because she thought that it was normal, and she always answered: "Oh she is a child she cannot be on a diet." In my adolescence when I first started menstruating, I lost a lot of pounds. When I was in high school, I was pretty stable in my weight, but in college, that is where the real problem started. I had no control of my eating habits, and I ate regularly. In the morning, I used to take a full breakfast, and within two hours I have consumed a snack. As a result, I gained a bunch of extra pounds. One day I was checking my weight, and I was surprised to find that I weighed 153 pounds, but these did not motivate me to start exercising or eating healthy meals. We had our summer vacation, and when I came back to school, one of my classmates asked, “What I was doing during this time because I was looking like a pig.” I was shocked, because I could not imagine how fat I was. Since that time I started eating balanced diet food and exercising. My aim of making this drastic change was not to have the ideal measurements that everyone dreams of, but to control my diabetes disease and improve health. After exercising on a daily basis, I lost 28 pounds.
Wrestling has showed me to not show how you feel when you step on that mat. “Never show your opponent's weakness.” That is exactly what I do when I’m around others, I don’t show weakness. It’s not really good to show others how you feel. Reasons why people don’t try to put me down. They know I’ll fight back. I don’t let anything get in my way of being successful; and if something does, all I do is push it out of my way. I am different compared to any other female athlete in my school. Wrestling has shaped me into a person who enjoys challenges. “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.” I’ve changed so much, I love to be challenged now. Wrestling identifies me in my personality and sense of humor. Makes me very unique. My teammates too we are all very different in many ways. And it shows others that I’m not like everyone else. I have learned over the years that I am a strong, independent person and I don’t let anything get in my way. I thank that I have found an interest that I love and that defines who I am. If it wasn’t for this sport I would never be known as much as I am. I am a leader who loves to overcome challenges that try to stop me from moving forward. I don’t interact much, I’m very quiet at times, but I am a fun
I stayed inactive all the way through High school until one day I told myself I wanted to try something new. That new thing I tried was Wrestling. Now this sport changed my life. In a good way. I met new people this sport I believe is one of the hardest. It showed me discipline, showed me to respect others , and to never give up. To just keep going. This sport gave me confidence and it made me not doubt myself on anything I do. It literally changed my life it gave new ways to take on the world it made me a lot smarter. I am thankful for this
Over the years, I have been involved in many activities from sports to being a teacher for English as a second language. Sports have been the things that have meant the most to me. Competing in both volleyball and softball have not only taught me the sport but also how to be a better person. Playing Sports has made me a very competitive person, which helps in the sports world and in the school world. I am always competing with myself to do better. Always pushing myself to do my absolute best. Another life lesson that playing sports has taught me is that you have to work hard in everything you do, nothing in life comes easy. My parents have always told me to work hard and do everything to the best of my ability and sports has really made me
This single event changed everything about me, I thought but I quit became a very common word in my vocabulary, If I couldn't see a point to wrestling, how many other things were there that I didn't want to do, and it only went downhill from there. I have always been lazy, and loved to procrastinate, but for the first time I let
For as long as I can remember gymnastics has been one of the biggest parts of my life. It has taught me so many important life lessons and without it I wouldn't be the person I am today. Gymnastics is a very disciplined sport and there is so much I have gotten from it. I have learned how to set goals, to push myself even when things are extremely difficult, and most of all the sport has taught me how to dream. Nothing beats the feeling I get when I see a trick for the first time and I wish deep in my heart that I will one day be able to do that skill. When I finally achieve this skill, I feel pure joy and satisfaction. Learning these important life lessons from gymnastics has helped me turn around and be able to use these skills in my everyday
Making a lifestyle change is challenging, especially when you want to transform many things at once. I think in the past a healthy behavior that I have tried to change is to be more physically active. I was a very active person in high school but have struggled to stay active throughout my college years. I am the kind of person who enjoys the physical experience of exercise I consider myself to be intrinsically motivated. I really enjoy the post-workout high the feeling of being exhausted because I have devoted time to myself in the gym. The exhilaration I get after working out and the sense of accomplishment that comes from lifting heavier weights, running longer or faster. There are many mental aspects of working out that also stem from self-efficacy. It
It has taught me discipline, perseverance, and how to set goals for myself. Not only has the gym taught me lessons that are applicable to real life, but it has also been the one place throughout the years where I can go to clear my mind and stay focused. With the aid of daily exercise, I am able to steer clear of the methods that many teenagers use to deal with stress, such as drugs or alcohol. There have been numerous occasions where I have passed on the opportunity to indulge myself in these stress-relieving methods that a surprisingly large number of my past and present peers resort to, because I know that I have my own way to alleviate the troubles that life persistently brings. It keeps me out of trouble and ushers me along the true path of not only how I want to treat my body, but what I want to do with my
Growing up I participated in organized sports such as soccer and wrestling. Participating in sports allowed me to acquire important traits responsibility, respect, courage, discipline, being a team player, and the willingness to help others. During my senior year in high school I was voted team captain of my wrestling team. My teammates voted me as a team captain because I was always willing to go out of my way to help others.
It really makes way for a successful future for the kids. Also by reaching out to elementary schools and holding wrestling intramurals after school gets kids interested in the sport of wrestling. Some of the biggest recruitment of wrestlers starts in the hallways of schools. “Trying to get kids out of the hall to help you out and help them” (Schoettle). A lot of kids are looking for a call, something to keep them busy. When kids have too much time on their hands they start getting themselves in trouble, like fighting, the use of drugs, burglary, and other mischievous things misled kids do. Bringing these kids to the wrestling team limits those opportunities, and give them something other than schoolwork to work towards. It actually motivates them to do school work so they can be part of the team. Wrestling and other sports have the ability to change the paths for kids. Wrestling is appealing to any physique, so kids who lack size or height that is necessary to be competitive in certain sports such as basketball and football have the opportunity to be great.
Growing up I was a three-sport athlete and it was easy for me to keep the weight off. I played volleyball, basketball, and softball all through high school. I then continued my volleyball career in college. Staying in shape in college was much easier because of the mandatory sessions for working out and staying in shape. After college, I was always active and played in a YMCA volleyball league for years along with playing on the sand courts when weather permitted. My life took a turn when I started to teach, I tried to eat healthy and workout but have found it hard to do those things with my schedule. When I was coaching and teaching, I had very little time for me. I had to be at work at 7am and did not leave until 6:30pm or even later on game days. Eating healthy has been an issue most of my adult life. I have found it hard eat healthy because of work hours and because of money. Teacher salary in North Carolina is ridiculous and it is hard to eat healthy when you cannot afford to by healthy
