Be Yourself Have you ever noticed somebody who acts like somebody who he isn’t? Well the main character in this story is just like that. In the story A Sound of Thunder Eckels, the main character, goes back in time to kill a T-Rex With the help of the company Time Safari Inc. Eckels travels back in time with four other people two of are the guides and the other two also came to kill a T-Rex . The guides names are Travis, and Lesperance. A Sound of Thunder is written by Ray Bradbury. In the story the character Eckels acts tough but Eckels is actually selfish and insecure. One quote from the story that shows Eckels acts tough is when Eckels was replying to one of the guides saying that they might not come alive and he said “Eckels flushed angrily ‘trying to scare me’” this shows that Eckels acts tough because they tried to scare him and he didn’t want to look intimated so he tried to act angry and act like he is tough and doesn’t get scared easily. Another quote that shows this is when Eckels is in the time machine with the other people and the guides. The quote was “‘think’ said Eckels ‘every hunter that ever lived would envy us today…’” This quote shows that he wants to kill the dinosaur to show people he is tough and it also shows that Eckels is insecure. …show more content…
A quote that shows Eckels is insecure is a quote from right at the start of the story Eckels was thinking about killing the dinosaur. The quote is “warm phlegm gathered in Eckels throat; he swallowed and pushed it down.” This shows that he is scared but he doesn’t want people to know because he wants to impress people by killing the dinosaur and not being scared, and if he wants to impress people that means he is
A great fisherman named Harry Middleton once said a very popular quote, “Fishing is not an escape from life, but often a deeper immersion into it.” This quote is true to many fisherman out there, because every fisherman goes fishing to find themselves and get lost in their own thoughts. Being a perfect fisherman is a very complicated thing to do, a perfect fisherman has to be strong, passionate, brave, smart and have a lot of life experience. The book The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger, a true story about fishermen, has many perfect fishermen with all of those characteristics. Just three of the perfect fishermen in The Perfect Storm are Bobby Shatford, Billy Tyne and Dale Murphy, otherwise known as Murph. The reasons behind of why Shatford, Tyne and Murphy are perfect fishermen are; they are dauntless,
Did you know that you have been lied to? Time and time again, people in and out of fiction have told you things that aren’t exactly true, but you both knew it was a lie (a rather sarcastic one at that). This is an example of what is called irony— what results when the actual outcome differs from what was expected— and irony is something that is heavily featured in Mildred Taylor’s historical fiction novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. In this book Mildred Taylor’s use of irony helps to accomplish three main tasks: characterize the monochromatic cast of characters, elucidate and illuminate the main theme of the passage, creating, setting, and modifying the ambiance and mood of the various chapters.
In Oedipus Rex, Oedipus faces a terrible tragedy mostly caused by his own insecurities. Sophocles literally shows us the human nature for always wanting to know more information about ourselves no matter the cost. Had Oedipus not cared about what was being said about him and left well enough alone he could have avoided his whole predicament and lived a happy life with his wife and children.
It takes a big act of courage in a lot of sticky situations. In “Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry” by Mildred D. Taylor I believe Stacey Logan followed his convictions the most out of any character when he made the plan to stop the bus, helped TJ after he was beat up and framed by the Simms boys, and taking the blame when TJ cheated on the test. Stacey was a 12-year-old boy who is loyal throughout the entire book. Stacey knew that there would be many consequences for the things he did.

In stories of all kinds, a common theme is “choices”. Choosing what to do with your life, choosing who you want to be with, choosing to defy stereotypes and doing things nobody would expect you to do. In our English course this year, we have read the story Everyone Talked Loudly in Chinatown and watched the film Into the Wild, both of which deal with important choices in life.
In “A Sound of Thunder,” the main character, Eckels, goes on a safari that involves traveling to the past. Eckles is a very stubborn and rude. He is the type of character that only cares about himself and his own safety. For example he doesn’t care about animals dying. For instance when Travis is telling him about how if they even accidentally kill one animal it can completely change the future and that will also kill the families of the animals, and Eckels response is “So they’re dead,” and “So what?” He is also a very scary person at times. For example ’Trying to scare me!’”, “’I miscalculated, that’s all. And now I want out.’
Being courageous has nothing to do with who you are, it’s what you do that counts. During the novel, Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry Mildred Taylor uses Stacey to show his courageousness. It all starts when he thinks up a very creative plan to stop the bus, then it advances to Stacey fighting T.J., and also as he helped T.J when he was hurt. He makes a plan to stop the bus to it would quit splashing his siblings on his way to school. He also fights T.J down at the Wallace Store when he gets into trouble for what T.J did. He then helped T.J. get back to his house after he got beat up by R.W and Melvin.
Courage can not be told or said, it has to be shown by actions. In the novel, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Mildred D. Taylor uses a young black girl, by the name of Cassie Logan. She shows us that, for a young 9 year old she has courage to stand up for what is right. Cassie shows courage when she stood up for her brother Little Man, when she stood up for what was right at the Barnet store, and when she was willing to help T.J. even though he had put her family through a lot. Cassie is a sassy and outspoken girl, who loves the land she lives on. When she finally understood why blacks were treated the way they were, and even before, she stood up for what was right. Cassie shows to everyone around her, that she is willing to fight for what is right, and stand up for her convictions.
“Got me better friends than ya'll! They give me things, and treat me like a man and.... and they white too.” This is a quote by T.J Avery in Mildred Taylor’s novel, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry. T.J is foolish, sneaky, and dishonest. In the end, this leads to his near death experience.
I think that Eckles is always acting brave but he is really just scared, careless, and full of himself. When he sees the dinosaur he runs away like a baby and steps of the path. Which shows that he is careless and scared because he was tolled not to run of the path and also should have thought about hunting a T. Rex before he went back in time. Also he is always bragging about how he has gone hunting before. Which shows that he is full of himself because he is not listening to others.
He has so much pride that he is unable to listen to others because he thinks he knows everything. When people tell him something, he always fights back even though they may be right. He is a very rude person and likes to tell others what to do. When Tiresias tell Creon that he is treating the city bad, he starts to get into a fight with Tiresias and Creon starts to talk bad about Tiresias, “Old man, you pot away at me like all the rest as if I were a bull’s-eye, And now you aim your seer craft at me. Well, I’m sick of being bought and sold by all your soothsaying tribe. Bargain away! All the silver of Sardis, all the gold of India is not enough to buy this man a grave; Not even if Zeus’s eagles come, and fly away with carrion morsels to their
Courage is Something Earned not Given Courage doesn't come from being strong, but having mental toughness. Through the book, Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry, Mildred Taylor uses Cassie as a very courageous character. She is a young girl that encounters many obstacles and faces them with grit and courage. Cassie shows her courage when she stood up to Lillian Jean, when she stood up for Little man multiple times and when she snuck out with Stacey to take T.J. home after being beat up. To sum it up, she was one of the greatest and most courageous characters in the book.
He starts the conversation by trying to say that what he did was a good thing, or else it would not have happened more than once. Then, instead of just telling Escalus what happens, he says, “I beseech your honour, ask me?” (2.1.130) He is dying
