Artificial intelligence (AI) is the “new electricity”. Today, AI is the highest-impact technology that has the potential to alter the pace of scientific progress and enhance human decision-making. Using machine learning and artificial intelligence for solving social issues can be fulfilling both emotionally and financially. This epiphany struck me when I came across a slew of start-ups which worked with the Indian government in the implementation of JAM trinity programs (Jan Dhan - Opening bank accounts, Aadhar - Citizen Identity Card, Mobile connectivity). As a result, rural labor engaged in government projects in India receive 100% of their wages every week in their bank accounts without paying bribes to intermediaries. AI has already become a …show more content…
To succeed in this endeavor, I believe that a Master’s degree in Computer Science (CS) from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (UW-Madison) is the logical next step. As an avid quizzer, I was fascinated when IBM Watson beat two of Jeopardy’s all-time greats Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings. Consequently, I realized that the “Man vs Machine” could be transformed into a “Machine for man” paradigm whereby machine learning augments human intelligence in solving practical issues. I developed a keen interest in Maths, Physics and Computer Science at the Higher Secondary level (Grades XI and XII) where I graduated with a 99th percentile score. To realize my aspiration, I specialized in Computer Science in the undergraduate program at the College of Engineering, Anna University, the oldest technical school (1794) and a Top 10 ranked engineering school in India (NIRF India). This program had foundational courses on Artificial Intelligence, Probability and Queuing Theory, and interdisciplinary courses on Algorithms and Theory of Computation. I also built up my programming skills in C, C++, Java and
Prior to this, growing up in Kathmandu, Nepal, my childhood consisted of me daydreaming of becoming the one and only computer scientist. I was just another young, eager child to meet life’s challenges. Taking these daring challenges led my journey to University of Massachusetts Lowell to pursue a degree towards computer science leading me closer
This article elaborated on the concept of artificial intelligence, which to the author is better described as, “Heuristic programming”, or programming that is unpredictable and dangerous. This arises multiple issues such as the ethics and flaws of artificial intelligence. It’s typically deemed unsafe to implement and continue to advance artificial intelligence as there are multiple unnecessary problems that arise from expanding capabilities of AI. The author and professor at Carnegie Mellon University, David Lorge Parnas, has had much experience with the concept of artificial intelligence as he’s been programming for over six decades. Relative to the two books he has published in his life, this article is very new and was published in October 2017, adding credibility to this academic journal.
Artificial intelligence pertains to the ability of digital computers or computer-controlled robots to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings, such as humans. Since the mid-20th century, scientists have attempted to develop a system capable of carrying out tasks perceived as requiring human intelligence which includes natural language understanding, fault diagnosis, and supplying expert advice ("Artificial Intelligence(ai)," 2011, n.p.). Although many people, particularly workers within the , are concerned about the effects of artificial intelligence, the capabilities of these machines can benefit society in a multitude of ways ("Artificial Intelligence(ai)," 2011, n.p.). According to Obama, in a speech in Pittsburgh during the 2011 the Robotics Initiative, “Revolutions in technology have transformed the way we live and the way we work,” (Executive Office, 2016). This is in fact true since AI has already begun to have reaping major benefits to the public in fields as diverse as health care, criminal justice, and also the education of individuals which will ultimately revolutionize society (Executive Office, 2016).
Artificial intelligence and robotics are growing to become increasingly influential in our society. With new technology always comes new concerns however, with this particular technology, there are much greater concerns than any event in history. Artificial intelligence has presented dangers such as a loss of employment across all job spectrums, an exponentially increased wage gap in which there are a select few who hold the majority of the wealth and the rest are impoverished, and the mere fact that the magnitude of knowledge that would be acquired in incomprehensible to humans. The main reason AI is so threatening is its ability to teach itself to improve, this is known as machine learning. Through all the contrasting arguments on the implications of these new technologies, one common fact can be agreed on by supporters and resisters alike: artificial intelligence in inevitable, it is coming, no one truly knows when and how but the fact remains that, eventually, artificial intelligence will be integrated with society as we know it.
I want to learn, create, and innovate at CMU, Pittsburgh with a ‘Major’ in Computer Science at the School of Computer Science, in the University.
Since childhood, I have always known that I wanted to pursue a STEM related career. I was fascinated by the evolving technological world and the various advancements but computers, in specific, stood out to me. Soon, working with computers came easy to me and I was off in identifying new software and utilizing programming languages alongside electrical components for various projects such as an LED displaying text on an Arduino board. Mathematics and science have also been strengths of mine and coming from a family with strong mathematical and scientific knowledge, I learned to integrate them into coding projects such as Sierpinski’s carpet and a basketball game. It is no surprise that our modern world is heavily computation and data driven.
Finally, I believe that the pursuit of happiness, and returns to society are the two most sensible goals in life. I intend to achieve these twin objectives by enriching myself with the abundant knowledge, research and education that a Masters degree in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, Davis will
