Having a strong interpersonal communication competence is a very valuable asset to have when interacting in one’s everyday life. Without a strong competence, one would expect to have trouble adapting to others, managing conversations, being involved in conversations, being empathetic towards others, being effective when conversing, and even being appropriate during interpersonal communication; therefore, as previously stated, it is a necessity to have strong interpersonal communication competence skills. I would say that my competence in interpersonal communication is very strong as I am able to be conversationally involved and appropriate. Overall, I am a great communicator; however, I could use improvement in my effectiveness, adaptability, …show more content…
Similar to appropriateness, I scored a near-perfect score of fourteen out of fifteen. Conversational involvement is the act of being involved by showing verbal and non-verbal methods of involvement. According to the workbook, conversational involvement is described as the ability to be exceptionally engaged in conversations by producing non-verbal messages in order to show the sender that the receiver is maintaining acknowledgement while the message is being sent. (Monahan, 2016) I scored so high because whenever I am having a conversation with someone I am generally very involved in the conversation whether this includes head nods or other forms of expressions non-verbally. For example, when I am being spoken to and I agree with someone I typically nod while waiting for them to continue. After they have spoken, I express my opinion/views on the topic and follow that with being more engaged in what they’re saying. Another example for how I am involved in conversations, is when my mother asks me small questions to make sure that I have heard everything she has said, almost like a mini quiz to ensure I am following what she is saying. I, generally, answer these questions with the correct answer; however, I do, sometimes, start thinking about other things such as what I have to do later in the day rather than listening. This category of communication is extremely important because it gives the current speaker a signal that the other person or people are following along with what he or she is saying. Without these clues during conversations, the speaker will often stop and wait for the person or people to give these
My interpersonal skills have been developed through working closely with colleagues whilst on placement but also through my employment at the coffee shop, this has been particularly useful when training new staff.
Have you ever had to communicate important information to a diverse group of people you share unique working relationships with? Carrying the responsibility of managing the day to day operation of a fifty five million dollar medical Distribution Company forces me into communication instances which require care and precision for effective delivery. As an Operations Leader, I am responsible for delivering information to a large group of diverse individuals serving several different employment roles. Even though the audience is not responding audibly, as the presenter, I must communicate through a through a transactional communication model, meaning that, “I must communicate simultaneously with my
If you accept yourself as you are, you will be more likely to accept others as they are. If you can admit and forgive yourself for mistakes, you will be more likely to allow others to make mistakes and to forgive them as well.”(Sole, K. 2011 Making connections: Understanding interpersonal communication. San Diego, CA: Bridgepoint Education, Inc. (https://content.ashford.edu). From an early age, one learns how to communicate with others by engaging in his or her own personal development. These interpersonal styles become valuable to an individual. For instance, one learns from his or her parents how to exercise manners. Over the years, I have acquired interpersonal skills from my family, education, and employment that has proven to be quite beneficial. However, as a human, being perfect is quite difficult. Despite, the strengths that one may possess, weaknesses are also present.
SC4 Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and high level interpersonal skills including a capacity to develop constructive relationships with students, parents and other staff.
We communicate both nonverbally and verbally with people even if we do not realize it at the time. The way that we communicate with others is important because communication is both irreversible and unrepeatable (Adler et al., 2015). Once a communicative exchange occurs between people it can never be taken back nor replicated. Every exchange that people have is unique based on the environment it occurs in, the noise that is happening both within the sender and the receiver, and even what is going on around the encounter. Competent communication is communication that is both effective and appropriate. Effective communication is when a sender receives the results that he or she was hoping to get after the encounter; whereas, appropriate communication is when a relationship grows because of the exchange that occurred (Adler et al., 2015). There are several different characteristics of communication competence that produce effective communication overall, which include: a large repertoire of skills, adaptability, the ability to perform skills, involvement empathy, cognitive complexity, and
In the self-evaluation of communication competency, I felt that my strengths were in Empathy, Commitment, Self-monitoring, and having a Wide Range of Behaviors. An example of Empathy being one of my strengths is that I am able to pick up and feel another person’s feelings and current situation as if I was experiencing them myself, particularly with my family members and closest friends. An example of Commitment being another strength is that I care deeply for others and their feelings, and the message being conveyed between us when we are communicating. I actively seek to better my communication skills by demonstrating thoughtfulness, sincerity, and compassion in order to better my relationships with others who I care about.
Communication competence is the first thing every new group member should understand before beginning a group project. Communication competence is “considered very broadly as an impression that behavior is appropriate and effective in a given context” (Spitzberg, 2000). This includes being effective by having a wide range of behaviors and being in the “we”, not “me” mentality, being appropriate by complying with the group rules, have the knowledge to learn the rules and know how to be a proper asset in your group, having empathy or being sensitive towards your group members, staying committed to your group, and lastly being ethical. Our groups communication was very competent. When it came to group decision making, there was no hint of individuality, none of the members had a me mentality, but instead we all as a group put what we wanted aside to agree on a board game that would be the most appropriate for the assignment. For example, I wanted to play poker instead of monopoly but due to the fact that I was the only one in our group that knew how to play poker I quickly agreed with monopoly. Furthermore, all the group members showed commitment, and ethics. Many of us had a busy week schedule to include work and other classes so when we were able to settle on a time and date for a meeting everyone stayed committed to the schedule and arrived on time. While we had these group meetings and game nights everyone in the group was respectful towards each other by not making any rude remarks or aggressiveness when there was disagreement and being responsible by not attempting to cheat to win
Q1. Describe the key interpersonal skills you would have used in this interview to engage with Amelia.
I want to be good at communicating. I learned that no one is born a competent communicator because to communicating competently requires skills that we have to learn and practice. I always thought that I can’t ever be a good communicator because the communication trails in my family is weak. We are shy and are not sociable. It is a good thing that “no matter which traits we’re born with, we still have to know how to communicate competently.” The book define communication competent as to communicating in ways that are effective and appropriate for a given situation. Communicating effectively is to use behaviors that achieve your communication goals. Communicating appropriately is to use behaviors that apply in a social situation. In other word,
Being a position that requires communication can definitely be beneficial. I have been volunteering for nearly two years at a crisis hotline and have since felt my communication skills over the phone improve significantly. Interacting with people frequently also tends to ease people's worries when it comes to communication, so it is understandable that your communication competency is high, especially in a position of authority.
As communicative competence becomes a more focused goal for classrooms across the U.S., student progress in developing higher levels of proficiency becomes increasingly important. In order to prepare students adequately for the work force as well as post-secondary education, students need a long sequence of well-articulated language learning that begins in elementary school. If students are expected to be ready to use their languages for professional purposes upon entering the work force, they need to leave the K-12 educational system with an Advanced level of proficiency and the post-secondary world at the Superior level. Meeting these levels of proficiency requires that students begin early and continue in an extended sequence of language
Verderber, K, Verderber, R and Berryman-Fink, C. 2010, stated that interpersonal communication is, “The process through which people create and manage their relationships, exercising mutual responsibility in creating meaning.” (Pg. 5) To be an effective communicator, it is vital that the person possesses and practices effective interpersonal/communicational skills. Over this semester, important interpersonal skills have been developed through a series of six workshops and assessed in two pieces of assessment. First position, second position and third position skills were performed. This reflective essay provides a critical analysis of my interpersonal skills developmental process of the three skills listed above; including my strengths, weakness and improvements.
There are vital features that contribute to good interpersonal skills, such as effective listening, oral communication, self-awareness, and reflecting. Effective listening is a
As a first-year student at Trine, I have chosen to take a course called Interpersonal Communications. Interpersonal communication is defined as a transactional process involving participants who occupy different but overlapping environments and create meaning and relationships through the exchange of messages, many of which are affected by external, physiological and psychological noise. As a living species, I have learned to communicate with others. I will say that I have always looked at myself as being a good communicator. After reading the first couple chapters in the book, and completing the assignment “Communication Skills Inventory” I have realized that I could become a better communicator in different
