The coursework can be challenging. However, a certificate from a school can make your resume stand out from the crowd. Graduate certificates are growing in popularity. For college grads that want to gain skills or a resume boost, a certificate can be an easy way to meet goals without enrolling in a full graduate program. Consider the certificates now offered at several universities. Students that already have Master's degrees can earn graduate certificates by taking less than ten additional online courses. Certificate programs include specializations in Business and Technology Management, Education, and Psychology (Arabe, 2003). Most online students use course management systems such as Blackboard to master the material. Some learn by streaming audio or video lectures. But, universities are offering courses that are taking online studies to the next level. According to a recent article by the New York Times, an increasing number of online courses are holding sessions in Second Life, a virtual world that mimics real life. Students and teachers have avatars that look like real people. They can hold discussions, interact, and display multimedia
Most individuals are finding the online world flexible and convenient, and accurately matching their objectives and busy kind of lives. Online learning capabilities have proliferated and have ensured vital knowledge and skills for the learners. Students can easily locate various learning programs online, and these are always accessible and convenient for any interested party in the online fraternity. However, there are few challenges that are associated with the online world, but the educators have provided succinct methods that can be used by learners to develop knowledge and skills that are associated with the learning platform.
Currently, students around the country, even the world, have the choice to either attend a class face-to-face with a teacher inside a classroom or computer-generated classes in online colleges or Universities. Even though they are similar, the differences between the two are somewhat remarkable. Obviously both types of learning require instructions and some form of assessment and they differ in terms of the learning process and communication.
1. The major project for this course is creating a marketing plan. Provide company name, a description and URL, if available. You need to either select a small company or small non-profit that is already in business; however, if you work for a large company and would like to focus on that then concentrate on one small part; for example: your department. This project will become part of your portfolio created in the MBA Capstone course so create it for something that can be shared (with whom you choose to share it with). For example: if you create a plan for your department and are sharing confidential information you won’t want to use it later in the Capstone class.
The online educational environment is increasingly being used by students and should be designed based on the needs of online learners. According to Felder (1996),”learning styles are characteristic strengths and preferences in the way [learners] take in and process information.” We are the next generation of student online learners so we should put everything we learn online into our daily agendas in everyday life.
The first distinction between learning in an online classroom versus that of a traditional brick and mortar classroom is that of time. Students log into their virtual classroom at times of their choosing to learn and complete assignments. The virtual campus that we use has click functions that are set up like a regular classroom. These functions mimic interactions between course facilitators and students in traditional settings.
Alisa Stern’s article discusses the boom of online learning in higher education institutions and the major challenges an instructor faces with these online courses. According to Stern, the most challenging thing about an online course is replicating the same learning environment a student would get attending a regular face to face class. She discusses how technology has pushed online learning to become more collaborative and less isolated. Furthermore, Stern has experienced teaching an online courses and discusses the different tools that helped her recreate a conventional learning environment in an online course. Stern mentions that communication played an important role in the way she taught her courses and students felt as if she was interested
Today's schools are mired with problems that are preventing students from receiving the best education possible. Instead of staying the current course, an investment in building schools inside of the virtual world of Second Life for students to attend online would be the best way for students to receive an education. A school hosted on Second Life would mean less money focused on the physical content of a school without sacrificing the social aspect of one.
Computer based learning, as it stands, has plenty of disadvantages, but many in business and educational arenas remain optimistic about its future. There are two indisputable truths about computer-based learning, or e-learning. First, it will revolutionize education and second, such a future is just around the block. Educational experts agree that most types of study are not yet effective when delivered purely online, mainly because of bandwidth limitations, expensive set-up costs, continued resistance to the medium and a shortage of quality course content.
When a person thinks of someone going to college they probably imagine them walking across a large campus or sitting in a lecture hall among other students. While this is the way many people do choose to attend college, there are also those who have chosen to get their degree in an online setting. Online learning gives people the opportunity to get their education in a way that is more flexible and can fit in with their daily lives. Though both are reputable forms of higher educations, there are distinct differences between learning in a tradition classroom and learning in an online setting.
The MBA program was introduced for the first time in the United States in the early 20 th Century and was modeled on the basis of the prevalent 2-year graduate programs. Technology is changing every aspect in our lives, even the way we learn. Online classes are a rapidly growing trend it today’s society. Online classes are a cost-effective substitute for traditional courses and more convenient for many, so more schools and universities are offering this option. Due to the increase in online course enrollment, people are questioning if students truly learn something from online classes because it’s not a traditional learning environment. Online classes are just, if not more, effective as traditional classes because grades have increased and online discussions provide students with the chance to interact through networking while earning a degree for less than what it would cost to enroll at the same university.
With the ongoing changes in my industry, I believe that acquiring an MBA will greatly enhance my skills as a pharmaceutical sales representative by learning advanced theory and application. With an MBA, I hope to accomplish two goals: (1) career advancement within my company with the end in view to taking on specialty sales or new leadership roles; (2) Open new opportunities within the medical field sales. With these goals in mind, I am well focused on building a solid and successful career in health care management.
Virtual worlds have solved many of the challenges faced by educational institutions. Today, hundreds of colleges, universities and other learning organizations are either augmenting their current traditional classroom curriculum with a virtual learning component or are holding classes and entire programs exclusively in immersive learning environments in Second Life. Second Life’s persistent virtual environments give students an opportunity to work together synchronously and then return, individually or as a team. The learning space is always equally available, for geographically dispersed groups as well as for those who meet regularly in the physical world. This is especially useful when students require more flexible schedules or need to work asynchronously on the same project.
Andrew Simoncelli once said, “Students who take online classes must be motivated, independent learners.” This is relevant because independence and motivation is what it takes to succeed in an online course. Online learning will not only expand what students learn, but will also bring a number of positive changes in the way students are taught.
