Who is Most Responsible for the Deaths of Romeo and Juliet Romantic love stories are often ended with a tragedy, because of loss of passion or a loved one. These tragedies are often the result of one person’s actions that ended someone’s life or love. In the Romeo and Juliet play written by William Shakespeare, two citizens of Verona come together and fall deeply in love. Unfortunately their love comes to an end, along with their lives, because of a misunderstanding and a persistent feud between their families. Although there are many characters in this play that have contributed to Romeo and Juliet’s death, Friar Laurence is the person most to blame. Friar Laurence’s actions throughout the play resulted in the two star crossed …show more content…
A second reason the Friar should be held most responsible is the fact that he gave Juliet a remedy in order to “fake” her death. Friar Laurence tells Juliet: Take thou this vial, being then in bed, And this distilled liquor drink thou off; When presently through all thy veins shall runA cold and drowsy humour, for no pulse Shall keep his native progress, but surcease.(IV.i.93-97) In this quote Friar Laurence is telling Juliet to take the vial and to drink it when she goes to bed. This fluid (while going through her veins) will make her cold and drowsy and make it appear as if she does not have a pulse. However, her blood will continue moving naturally and will not stop. If the Friar had not given her the vial, Romeo would not have heard the news that she was dead and therefore would not have killed himself in Capulet’s tomb. Another basis of accusing Friar Laurence of the deaths of the two, is the fact that Romeo did not receive the information about the plan. The Friar tells Juliet, “In this resolve. I’ll send a friar with speed/To Mantua, with my letters to thy lord” (IV.i.1123-124). The Friar is telling Juliet that he will send a friar to Mantua with a letter, saying their plan. He should have sent the letter personally and not relied on another friar to deliver such an urgent and important message. Since the entire plan was his idea he should have followed through with it, making sure the information was
While he thought that it was a good idea to let Juliet fake her death she wrote a letter to Romeo, that friar was supposed to go give to Romeo because in act 5 scenes 2 it says that. “friar was unable to deliver the letter informing Romeo that Juliet that is not actually dead”. So the blame should mostly go to friar cause if he would of just sent the letter to Romeo than Romeo and Juliet would have go married and no one would have died and they live happily ever after. Although he didn’t get time to go deliver than Romeo wouldn’t have killed
The friar creates this entire plan, which can only be successful if all the stars are aligned properly and everything goes exactly as planned. The friar has to make sure that Romeo finds out about this plan by sending Friar John to deliver the news to Romeo. However, too much trust is placed in Friar John and he fails to deliver the message. Because of this Romeo sees Juliet's sleeping body and believes that she is truly dead and kills himself. Literally moments after Romeo dies Juliet wakes up, sees Romeo, and kills herself. The friar is overwhelmed by guilt and realizes that he has "...a short date of breath" (V iii 229). This could also be a confession that he is to blame. If the friar was not the reason for the two deaths he would not feel bad. Maybe if the friar would have been more careful about the delivery of the message, Romeo would have known that Juliet was sleeping and waited for Juliet to wake up and run off and live happily ever after, rather than killing
Love is the tightest bond two people can share, so tight people go to the extremes. In the play, “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet”, Romeo and Juliet end up dead in the end. Although there are many people to blame, Friar Laurence is primarily blamed for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
In the play “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare, Friar Laurence is to blame for the deaths of Romeo, Juliet, and County Paris. Through his mistakes and errors in judgment, Friar Laurence brought pain in suffering into the lives of the citizens of Verona and killed two young people in their prime.
We, the readers know that he was the character who gave Juliet the vial because he had said to Juliet, “Take thou this vial, being in bed, / and this distilling liquor drink thou off; / when presently through all thy veins shall run / A cold and drowsy humor; for no pulse / shall keep his nature progress, but surcease. / No warmth, no breath shall testify thou livest” (4.1.95-100). On the other hand, the fact that Friar Laurence went to Juliet’s tomb to bring her to his cell doesn’t change the fact that he mostly cares for himself. This was because Friar Laurence had left Juliet at the tomb once she had saw Romeo laying dead on the ground. Instead of leaving her, he should’ve helped her and persuaded her to leave with him to his cell. We, the readers, know that Friar Laurence left Juliet when he had said, “Stay not to question, for the watch is coming / come go, good Juliet. I dare no longer
“Take thou this vial, being then in bed,/ And this distilling liquor drink thou off;/ When presently through all thy veins shall run/ A cold and drowsy humor; for no pulse/ Shall keep
“ To rouse thee from thy bed, there art thou dead….. Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift…. Shall Romeo bear thee hence to Mantua” (Act 4, Scene 1, Lines 106, 114, 116). The friar’s plan of Juliet faking her death and then running away with Romeo had so many risks that can easily lead to their death. Both Romeo and Juliet have threatened to kill themselves if they couldn’t be with the other and the friar’s plan failed so it lead to them doing just as they threatened. To conclude, Friar Laurence is at fault for the tragedy due to his risky plan he made for Juliet and other
Romeo and Juliet is a story of two star-crossed lovers who take their lives. Romeo and Juliet come from families who hate each other with a passion, but they fall in deeply in love. Their lives could have been saved by one person, Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence married Romeo and Juliet without telling their parents, gave Juliet a potion to make her seem dead, didn’t deliver the letter to Romeo himself about Juliet’s “death”, and arrived too late at the Capulet’s tomb.
In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the deaths of the main characters, Romeo and Juliet, are the result of many actions committed by various characters. From Lord Capulet, the overbearing father, to Count Paris, the lovestruck kinsman, everyone plays a role in Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. Although Romeo and Juliet choose to kill themselves out of their own free will, Friar Laurence is the most accountable for their deaths. His encouragement of their naive actions, his haphazard scheme, and lack of caution when dealing with their lives, influences their decisions and leads to their untimely deaths.
He agreed to marry them and kept them in there love daze. Even though the Friar was only doing this because he wanted to help the feud. He helped Juliet create a “master” plan to not marry Pairs. If Friar Laurence made sure the letter got to Romeo and then he wouldn't be lead to believe Juliet was dead. If Romeo wouldn't have killed himself because he was led to believe Juliet was dead was really dead then Juliet wouldn't have stabbed herself. Friar Laurence could have stayed and stopped Juliet from killing herself be he was too scared and fled. The Friar shouldn't have gambled with his luck Friars are suppose to be all
In William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, two young lovers from feuding families fall in a foolish love. Many problems arise and the “star-crossed lovers” take their own lives in place for their love for one another. The two people most responsible for this tragedy are Friar Lawrence and Capulet. Fate plays a large role in the death of Romeo and Juliet seeing as if situations played out differently the play would have a different outcome.
The play “Romeo and Juliet” written by Shakespeare was a tragedy. A tragedy is an event that causes great suffering. ”Romeo and Juliet” is a tragedy that includes the death of six people. Two kids who were “in love” weren't allowed to be together because of their families feud. They claimed to be “in love,” but the truth is, this was a play about two teenagers lusting for sex. This lusting ultimately led to their untimely deaths. The Capulets and Montagues were the ultimate cause of the tragic death of Romeo and Juliet.
I believe that Friar Laurence is responsible for the tragic death of Romeo and Juliet. If the Friar didn’t make the potion would Romeo’s life had been spared. Wasn’t it the Friar that decided this was the plan that needed to take action. After all, Juliet thought about this plan and trusted Friar Laurence In a sense that everything would be turned out as planned. The Friar should have also made sure Romeo was in full correspondence with the plan as well. Balthasar should not have been the wingman on the trip. Friar Laurence made the mistake of putting himself on the line and he has to fully acknowledge that this was his fault.
One reason why Friar Laurence is responsible for Juliet’s death is because he is the one who gave Juliet the sleeping potion. For example, when he gave her the potion, everyone including Romeo believed that she was dead, and when Romeo found out that she was “dead” he killed himself. Which later lead Juliet to kill herself, if Friar Laurence would of never gave Juliet the Potion then neither of them would be dead, there really isn’t any
The primary reason that Friar Laurence is to blame for the tragedy is because he chose to give juliet the “poison” and he let her take it. Initially, the Friar and Juliet were talking and she told Friar Laurence that she would rather die than marry Paris, all
