Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it’s practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid’s and teen’s frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and the teachers grading it. So, I think that homework is …show more content…
Sometimes our parents have no time to help us because they have their jobs. Then if we can’t get any help it’s going to be either a late grade or an F because we can’t get a good grade without a complete assignment. Our parents could also have a goodnight sleep without having to worry about us failing their classes because of homework. Teachers will also gain out of no homework because they don’t have to deal with grading messy handwriting and awful grammar. They don’t have to stay up however long it takes just to grade all the papers their students. It’s especially hard for middle school teachers and up because there are so many kids and so many different classes. Teachers can go anywhere they want if their lesson plan is finished for the next day if there is no homework. They won’t have to deal with angry kids, teens and yelling at them if they’re failing school because of homework. Homework is keeping everyone up. It is also very frustrating hearing your assignment is due tomorrow because then we don’t get to do the things that we had planned for that day. For example, this essay I typed kept me up until I finished it. Waking up is the worst part. We get up feeling wimpy and restless. Sometimes were not even strong enough to eat breakfast, which is the most important meal of the day. Also
Studies show homework barely makes a difference. Kids claim homework is useless to them, and they might be right. Homework can be hard for kids and when they have trouble then it is harder for them to understand what the instructions are. Kids also get worried when they forget their homework. I think you should be able to turn in homework a day early or a day late. Most importantly kids do not perform better by a lot when they do homework. I think kids should have no homework.
The debate on homework has come up once again because much research has shown that it’s not very effective. But first what is Homework? “At the beginning of the twentieth century the term homework… referred to labor done to pay in one’s home, and in particular to sewing and other manual work which filled the afternoons and evenings of many young children in large cities” (Homework Destroys Family Life). Homework was considered to be work the children did at home such as chores or actual job outside the home. Over time the term evolved when education became more important and child labor laws were passed to enforce children to focus on education instead of working. This debate is not anything new because this has come up in many centuries before.
By not giving out homework, students will work harder in class and have better grades. Teachers have to understand that if students are tired from late nights, they wouldn't be able to work efficiently during the day. In addition, students would be much more excited to come to school because they know they wouldn't have to worry about getting any homework. In 2010, a survey was taken and it showed that about 70% of teen ages 11 to 17 get less than 8 hours of sleep per day due to the amount of homework they have to do (Logos). According to Alfie Kohen, students feel forced to do their homework, therefore they aren't learning as much as they should (Ethos). Students lose interest in the topic and do not benefit from what they’re learning. In China, a cry for change by a mother who lost her thirteen year old daughter who committed suicide due to her inability to achieve in math, the mother considers homework is a huge negative factor toward her deceased daughter's tragic ending along with the pressure of society (Pathos). Such a story should leave us wondering, how many more children need to suffer the silent epidemic of school stress. Statistics prove the leading cause for the majority of physical and emotional complaints leading up to diagnosis of depression in middle and high school due to the amount of
Students feel more stressed and turned off to learning, which is, a lifelong pursuit when it comes to homework. Too much homework turns kids off to learning and makes them less rather than more invested in school and learning. Are children having too much homework? There has been a big disagreement about if students should have homework or students should not have homework. Some people say they should not have homework and some say they should have homework. Children should not have homework, because it wastes all of the time out of school.
To start off, I strongly believe that the school district shouldn't continue assigning homework to us students, and here's why. In source 2, 'List of 10 Big Pros and Cons of Homework", it states that homework is stressing to those who are young because it's a lot to take in, after being tired of learning multiple lessons in one day. This could lead to kids being less motivated about school and possibly become down about themselves.
Some teachers believe that homework is good because it makes us think more, and a strong knowledge. But, if you really think about it, it cuts into our child hood life. Kids like to go outside and play with their friends. So why should we get homework? If you were a teacher, would you give your students homework? If so why? I believe that we have enough class work, quizzes, and test. Homework is extra. It’s unnecessary for students to have homework.
Homework has been around a long time. In fact, the first school made in the world was believed to be built sometime between 140 BC and 143 BC. While studies have proven that homework can have benefits, too much of it can be bad for students. Homework can take away their time for family/activities and can cause negative health effects. The amount of homework assigned to students should be decreased.
Body 1 Do you want homework ,well Debate Said “ Weekends are a time where people are supposed to have a break and spend time with their family. Teachers should not give homework because like I said weekends are supposed to be a break from school and just time to be lazy but students can't because they are worrying about homework. So teachers shouldn't give homework on the weekends”.
The only reason why we shouldn’t have homework is because kids don’t have time to play or have fun with their friends. Also they don’t have time to go practice their sports just because they have a lot of homework to do. Kids are always inside doing homework and they don’t have time to be active at all. Kids don’t have time to play with their family.
Sandra Dodd once said, “Kids who are in school just visit life sometimes, and then they have to stop to do homework or go to sleep early or get to school on time. They’re constantly reminded they are preparing ‘for real life,’ while being isolated from it.” This is one side of an argument that has been going on for years, which is, “Should kids be given less homework?” Homework should be decreased because it is not valuable academically and students don’t have time to do homework after school.
Students use many different reason why they should not have homework. They have sports, they have a job, or they just don’t have time to complete homework in each class. Some people believe schools should not give their students homework. They believe homework is pointless, time consuming, or just plain busy work. One of the main reasons why parents and students believe homework should not be given is because of extracurricular activities. Yes, extracurricular activities does look good on transcripts, but so does good grades on homework and test. In the article, “Several reports found that high school students who receive homework on a consistent basis performed better on standardized tests and have higher grades than do students who don’t”
One side of the argument is that people believe that homework doesn’t help students. 4 in 10 parents say that most homework is just busy work. If you are wondering, not a single study has ever supported the folk wisdom that homework teachers good work habits or develops positive character traits such as self-discipline, responsibility or independence. Adults don’t see the pain there kids are in because of homework. The homework that the students get is driving them away from wanting to learn. The students are getting frustrated because of all the homework they have every night (Kohn).
I think we should not have homework because it infers with after school atives. According to “The Homework Debate” if you give kids too much homework they will not be able to go outside and just be kids. According to “BBC News” going outside is very important because it allows your kids to meet more kids and have a social life. Also if you assign too much homework to your kids the will not do it and if they do not do it, which will lower their grads, scores which will equal to the kids falling there grads and not good colleges or scholarships. And scholarships are imported because it will allow your kids to have a better financial start at life. Too much homework equals to less sleep, less focus, and mental health problems which equals
But for good reason. Homework takes away time from more important things, causes pressure, --heck, it causes suicides!-- it is unfair, and most importantly, it doesn’t help. Honestly, teachers, you have a choice; you can either have us be completely focused on homework and grades, missing out on a better life, or we can live a more healthy lifestyle, during which we can learn from experience, not textbooks, and maybe have a chance to make some changes in the world. It is time to decide.
The general arguments given by teachers and some parents are that homework increases the overall grade averages, sharpens study habits, and helps students become more prepared for college work. Along with that, it helps students learn responsibility for life in the work field of the real work. Although these arguments are valid, there are arguments against homework as well. Homework causes students to be stressed out when there is too much to be done by a certain deadline and takes away the free time of students. Some of the work that students are assigned isn't relevant to what they are studying. Worst of all, it causes that struggling student to lose interest in the study of that subject ("Students and Homework"). While it does have negative outcomes, homework also has it's perks.
