In David D. Hall’s essay Worlds of Wonder in the Northern Colonies and T.H. Breen’s Worlds of Goods in the Northern Colonies; the argument of the settler’s views or main objective on the land is put to question. David D. Hall supports the idea that religion was deeply rooted in the early settlers while T.H. Breen supports the idea that the early Americans only concern was becoming an “empire of goods.” While the two hold factual evidence to this argument, David D. Hall proves to be the most reliable due to its religious reliability of tradition. Being kidnapped by the Wampanoag Tribe and losing several family members to the ambush, she wrote about her sufferings during the time. While writing about her miseries she depicted the difference between the Native Americans and the Puritans, almost calling them savages for their lifestyle. While doing so, with every misery she experienced she connected her experience with a passage from the bible. “When we were come, Oh the number of pagans (now merciless enemies) that there came about me, that I may say as David, “I had fainted, unless I had believed, etc.”(Psalm 27:13) . In Rowlandson’s account, she uses Winthrop’s approach to writing of her experience. Claiming her struggle and connecting it to the bible (claim-evidence) she reverted back to her religion whole heartedly to help justify her misfortunes. What Winthrop and Rowlandson are essentially trying to depict is the deeply rooted religion based community that was built to guide the new settlers in their “World of Wonder.” Where it is easier to claim that everything good and bad can be explained through their religion . Between 1492-1776, although many people moved to the “New World”, North America lost population due to the amount of Indians dying from war and diseases and the inability of colonists to replace them. John Murrin states, “losers far outnumbered winners” in “ a tragedy of such huge proportions that no one’s imagination can easily encompass it all.” This thought of a decreasing population broadens one’s perspective of history from that of an excluded American tale full of positivity to that of a more unbiased, all-encompassing analysis. The Indians and slaves have recently been noted as a more crucial part of history than previously accredited with.
In the 1700’s the New England and Chesapeake regions prospered in agriculture and commerce, but it was the period of time before this that helped develop these regions into what they were at the time. The development of these regions were diversified by the religion that they practiced, native policies, and the social structure of the area. The religion brought to these regions helped alter their way living from one another.
In Worlds of Wonder in the Northern Colonies by David D. Hall, he discuss the role of religion in the northern colonies. Many of the things that happened or they endured were seen as different manifestations of their religion. Things such as losing material possessions or dying in a unforeseen way were seen as God showing you the error of your ways. In Document five, Dr. Hamilton discusses his time in various parts of the Northern colonies. While in New London he watches as people come together and burn their material possessions in order to save their souls. In a time when numerous countries were beginning to explore the new and exciting land of North America during the Age of Exploration, and groups of people from England and Spain were fleeing their home countries either for religious freedom or wealth, vast and civilized colonies began to form all throughout the New World. It is in this context that the colonies founded by the English and the Spanish began to develop and grow. There was a significant difference between the Spanish and New England colonies between 1492 and 1700 in terms of the treatment of indigenous people, and there were some immense similarities between the two colonies in terms of the role of religion in their society and the

For the English, immigration into the colonies meant facing one’s inessentiality; the colonies had high rates of mortality and weakly structured economies.11 Faced with their dispensability, settlers discovered new means to retain their cultural identities. For example, Quakers “rejected institutions of high culture and made virtues of simplicity and hard work in a hostile environment.” 12 They transplanted their theological cultural inheritances into colonial society and were able to perpetuate that facet of their identity in the colonies. The solidification of their communities was vital to the survival of their identities. For Scots, maintaining close relationships with prominent Scots in other colonies emphasized a Scottish identity, even across colonial borders.13 Maintaining relationships equated sustenance of old world culture through social interactions. In her writing titled “A Narrative of the Captivity and Restauration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson”, Mary lies out for the reader her experience of being held in captivity by Indians during the King Philip’s War. Perhaps one of the most significant aspects of this writing is the glimpse that the reader gets into Rowlandson’s faith and religion. Faith was a major aspect of life in the Colonial Period. It was of widespread belief that God was to be feared, and that he was the only way to redemption (Kizer). Mary Rowlandson was no different, but the extreme conditions of her captivity caused her faith to occasionally waiver. One reason for the Colonial Americans’ growth in faith is the fact the era was abundant with religious figures who strove to lead people to God and created guidelines for them to live by. The people of Colonial America were blessed to abide in an “enchanted world of wonders.” These wonders were no doubt brought on by the hand of God, and the recognition of this fact caused new religious leaders to rise up and help people focus on living Godly lives despite the secular distractions that they were presented with. One Puritan leader, John Winthrop, stated, “That which the most in their Churches maintain as a truth in profession only, we must bring into familiar and constant practice, as in this duty of love we must love brotherly without dissimulation, we must love one another with a pure heart fervently we must bear one another’s burdens…” Winthrop not only wanted each individual person to maintain a stronger focus on faith in daily life, he also wanted them to use their faith to unite together, and his Model of Christian Charity showed the people how to accomplish that. Many people tried to abide by these teachings and pass them onto their children before they made their own way in the changing, confusing world because many parents feared their children would “Fall un’wares in Fowler’s snare.”
Although the Chesapeake and New England colonies were the earliest English colonies to flourish in the New World, they were both extremely different in the ways that they developed. Similarities between the colonies can be found, but the colonies were mostly different. The colonies differed most in religion, society, culture, economy, and their relationships with the American Indians of the region. The reasons for such differences can be understood by realizing that the colonies were settled by incredibly different people who possessed different cultures, religious beliefs, and motivations for settling in their respective colonies in the first place. The Chesapeake and New England colonies had similarities and differences in their development, including how each colony affected nearby American Indians. Their differences and similarities can be understood by analyzing each colony’s geography, economy, religions, and cultures.
As English settlers arrived in the Chesapeake and then New England in the seventeenth century, they disembarked their boats and marveled at the seeming abundance of the landscape. They arrived with hopes of recreating their “old world” and prospering from the merchantable commodities that were lying before them. However, English colonization did not occur in a vacuum, and the settlers soon discovered that their survival would be dependent upon a forged coexistence with the native inhabitants. Surrounded by Indian worlds, the colonists established unique regional identities, with the south becoming dependent upon the cultivation of tobacco and the use of slave labor, and the north establishing subsistence family farms and developing a commercial economy. This capitalist system eventually reshaped the colonies, leading to continued expansion that transformed the American landscape, destroyed the delicate intercultural diplomacy with the natives, and cemented territorial distinctions – creating “new worlds for all.”
After her house was burned during a raid by local Indians. Rowlandson’s friends and family members were killed or captured by Native American in the 1676. Rowlandson and her baby were wounded, capture and forced to walk for days after the raid and Rowlandson had to watch her own child wither away and die due a lack food and medical care. During Rowlandson’s captivity with the Indians, the only thing she had to fall back on for her survival was her bible and her Puritan beliefs in God. This paper shows how Rowlandson’s understanding of the Puritan Tenets or beliefs helped her in deal with her captivity physically and spiritually. The reader should have an understanding of the Puritan Tenets and understand that the Tenets are not just words but a way of life for the Puritan.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, Europeans rapidly colonized the newly discovered Americas. England particularly sent numerous groups to colonize the eastern coast of North America. These groups separated into two regions - the Chesapeake and New England Colonies. The differences between the two colonies as it relates to their reasons for emigration, their economies, and their religious practices were distinct. Many of these original differences have faded into our collective history but many are still evident today. These differences provide insight into where we’ve come from, who we are as a nation, and where we may be headed.
Amid the 1700's, individuals in the American provinces lived in exceptionally unmistakable social orders. While a few homesteaders drove hard lives, others were solid and prosperous. The two gatherings who demonstrated these distinctions were the pilgrims of the New England and Chesapeake Bay zones. Throughout the chapter, religion’s effect on the development of the Northern American colonies is mentioned repeatedly. For example, German friar Martin Luther, who wrote and nailed the 95 Thesis to Wittenberg’s Cathedral, helped spur the “Protestant Reformation” into action. Other key members in the Reformation were John Calvin, who elaborated Luther’s writings and created ‘Calvinism’, and Henry VIII, who broke ties with the Catholic Church and made himself the leader of the Church of England.
“A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson” by Mary Rowlandson is a short history about her personal experience in captivity among the Wampanoag Indian tribe. On the one hand, Mary Rowlandson endures many hardships and derogatory encounters. However, she manages to show her superior status to everyone around her. She clearly shows how her time spent under captivity frequently correlates with the lessons taught in the Bible. Even though, the colonists possibly murdered their chief, overtook their land, and tried to starve the Native Americans by burning down their corn, which was their main source of food, she displays them as demonizing savages carrying out the devil's plan. This analysis will take a look at the works of three early American writers and how each of their arguments were conceived to match their individual viewpoints. The three writings we will be taking a look at examine how each author in said writings develops an argument based on the text. We will also be examine how each author’s argument is a reflection on Early American culture. We will be reflecting on writings of Benjamin Franklin, Christopher Columbus, and The Native Narrative. Each have a unique perspective on the newly formed American culture and solid arguments to push these ideals.
