The last of the four Gospels in the New Testament; it is markedly different from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Many of the most famous events in the life of Jesus—including the Sermon on the Mount and the sharing of the bread and cup at the Last Supper—are not mentioned in the Gospel of John, which concentrates instead on the deepest implications of Jesus’ mission. John’s Gospel opens, “In the beginning was the Word.”  1
