NOUN: A complex speech sound consisting of a stop consonant followed by a fricative; for example, the initial sounds of child and joy. Also called affricative.
ETYMOLOGY:Latin affrictus, past participle of affricre, to rub against : ad-, ad- + fricre, to rub.
