Hermosillo
 
 
(rms´y) (KEY) , city (1990 pop. 406,417), capital of Sonora state, NW Mexico, at the entrance to the gorge of the Sonora River. Hermosillo is a transportation, manufacturing, and agricultural center in an irrigated area where cereals and cotton are grown and cattle are raised. Established in 1700 as an indigenous town with a Jesuit missionary, the city was later renamed in honor of the Spanish general José María Gonzalez de Hermosillo.
