Nizhni Tagil
 
 
(nyzh´ny tgl´) (KEY) , city (1989 pop. 440,000), E European Russia, in the central Urals, on the Tagil River. A leading metallurgical and heavy industry center, it uses the ore from deposits at Kachkanar and on Mount Vysokaya. Railroad cars, machinery, and chemicals are manufactured, and copper, iron, and gold are mined in the district. Nizhni Tagil was founded in 1725.
