Stahl, Georg Ernst
 
 
(g´ôrkh rnst shtäl) (KEY) , 1660–1734, German physician and chemist. He taught (1694–1716) at the Univ. of Halle, then went to Berlin as court physician. He is known for his promotion of the phlogiston theory of combustion and for his theory—developed in his Theoria medica vera (1707)—that the soul controls the function and structure of the body.
