| at Uppsala, Sweden; founded 1477 by Sten Sture, the Elder, and Archbishop Jakob Ulvsson. Its activities were suspended in 1510 as a result of religious disputes. It was reorganized in 1595. It is the oldest university of N Europe and has ranked among the worlds great universities since its reorganization. The universitys library contains more than 1 million volumes and about 20,000 manuscripts, notably the Codex argenteus of Bishop Ulfilas The university has faculties of theology, law, medicine, arts (historical-philosophical and linguistic), social science, science, and pharmacy and an institute of cancer research. |
