QUOTATION:The glory of each generation is to make its own precedents.
ATTRIBUTION:Belva Lockwood (1830–1917), U.S. lawyer, feminist. quoted in Lady for the Defense, pt. 3, ch. 13, Mary Virginia Fox (1975).

Lockwood was arguing in favor of admitting women to practice in the U.S. Supreme Court, for which there was no precedent. In 1879 she became the first woman to practice there.
