ATTRIBUTION:Catherine Drinker Bowen (1897–1973), U.S. biographer. Adventures of a Biographer, ch. 10 (1959).

Though Bowen was referring to the “art” of writers, she was also a musician, and musicians had been her first biographical subjects.
