ATTRIBUTION:Condoleezza Rice (b. 1954), African American university administrator. As quoted in the Chronicle of Higher Education, p. B3 (June 15, 1994).

Rice, provost of elite Stanford University, was the granddaughter of impoverished people who had managed to send their children to college. She said this in a commencement speech at the University of Alabama.
