QUOTATION:While ... we cannot and must not hide our concern for grave world dangers, and while, at the same time, we cannot build walls around ourselves and hide our heads in the sand, we must go forward with all our strength to stress and to strive for international peace. In this effort America must and will protect herself.
ATTRIBUTION:Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945), U.S. president. Ed. Samuel I. Rosenman, Public Papers and Addresses of Franklin D. Roosevelt, vol. 4, p. 442, Random House (1938-1950). Edward M. Bennett, Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Search for Security: American-Soviet Relations, 1933-1939, p. 61, Scholarly Resources, Inc. (1985).

This was a continuation of the President’s attempt to ensure that the American people would not be lulled into a false sense of security by their ocean barriers, and to combat the isolationist sentiment which was paralyzing the U.S. response to world crises.
