| QUOTATION: | ... when we shall have our amendment to the Constitution of the United States, everyone will think it was always so, just exactly as many young people believe that all the privileges, all the freedom, all the enjoyments which woman now possesses were always hers. They have no idea of how every single inch of ground that she stands upon to-day has been gained by the hard work of some little handful of women of the past. |
| ATTRIBUTION: | Susan B. Anthony (18201906), U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 14, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902).
From the opening address of the twenty-sixth annual convention of the National Woman Suffrage Association, held February 15-20, 1894, in Washington, D.C. Anthony had been a leading suffragist for fifty years, had been tried and convicted in 1872 for attempting to register to vote, and would die fourteen years before implementation of the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution, granting suffrage to women. |
