The widow of Medgar Evers, a civil rights activist assassinated in 1963 in Mississippi, she was referring to the conviction of her husband’s murderer, Byron De La Beckwith, on February 5, 1994. In 1964, two all-white juries had deadlocked on the question of Beckwith’s guilt, resulting in mistrials and the eventual dismissal of the charge against him. Evers had managed to reopen the case and exert enough pressure to bring it to trial again. |
