calling on the women of Spain to defend the Republic. The expression, like “It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees” (said in the same broadcast; see Ibarurri on revolutionaries), became a slogan in the ensuing civil war. Previous attributions for this rallying cry include Marshal Pétain (1856-1951) during World War I: Ils ne passeront pas.
