QUOTATION:Reporter: “Mr. Gandhi, what do you think of Western civilization?”
Gandhi: “I think it would be a very good idea.”
ATTRIBUTION:Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869–1948), Indian political and spiritual leader. Attributed.

There is no evidence of this exchange having occurred in fact, though E.F. Schumacher mentions seeing a film of Gandhi disembarking at Southampton, England, in 1930, in which Gandhi is asked his opinion on modern civilization, and gives the answer as above. (Good Work, ch. 2, 1979).
