Cates, a 489-pound arthritic woman who had been virtually housebound, had her first acting role in the 1993 film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? Her character was sympathetic and dignified; her portrayal was acclaimed. Here, Cates was setting forth her condition for accepting any future film role. |
