ATTRIBUTION:Voltaire [François Marie Arouet] (1694–1778), French philosopher, author. Candide and Pangloss, in Candide, ch. 30, conclusion (1759).

Discusses exchanging the fruits of their experience. This passage is held to encapsulate Voltaire’s philosophy of common sense as against the complacency of “optimism.” Real name is François Marie Arouet.
