QUOTATION:Now that Stevenson is dead I can think of but one English- speaking author who is really keeping his self-respect and sticking for perfection. Of course I refer to that mighty master of language and keen student of human actions and motives, Henry James.
ATTRIBUTION:Willa Cather (1873–1947), U.S. novelist. originally published in the [Lincoln, NE] Courier (Nov. 16, 1895). repr. In The World and the Parish: Willa Cather’s Articles and Reviews, 1893-1902, vol. 1, ed. William M. Curtin, University of Nebraska Press (1970).

Later in the same column, Cather compares James’s “masterly prose” to the music of Mozart.
