| ATTRIBUTION: | EDWARD EVERETT HALE, motto of the Lend a Hand Society.
The first Lend a Hand Club was founded in 1871, followed by the incorporation of a league of clubs, the Lend a Hand Society, in 1891. Edward E. Hale, who founded the first club in Boston, Massachusetts, later became chaplain to the United States Senate.
