(8 pts) Station 1: Conductivity of Solutions
Identify each substance as an electrolyte, non-electrolyte, or weak electrolyte. Then rank them from strongest to weakest electrolyte. What trends do you observe?

Depends on whether there are ion in the solution as is conducts electricity in the solution. (8 pts) Station 2: Intermolecular Forces
a) Use the concept of intermolecular forces to explain your observations at this station.
Capillary action moves the acetone up the chalk and caused one of the glow sticks to not glow as it diluted the glow stick solution to the point that it did not glow. Acetone is nonpolar, so when it goes up, any compound in the solution will travel with the acetone up the chalk.
b)
It is known that some brands of glowsticks have two dyes with the structure shown on the right and on the next page. If you were to run this station again with the known glowstick, which compound would appear as the top band and which would appear as the bottom band?
Compound 1
Top band: Compound _1_ because Acetone is nonpolar, so when it goes up, any compound in the solution will travel with the acetone up the chalk
Bottom band: Compound _2_ because it didn’t travel up the chalk since it is polar

What was the appearance of your samples after adding bromothymol blue? Why?
The DI water was green and tap water was blue. b)
What happened to each sample as you added HCl? How much HCl was added to each sample? Come up with a hypothesis that can explain your observations for both DI and tap water.
The DI water’s pH went down much faster than the tap water because the ions are acting as a buffer, so that causes the tap water’s pH to decrease slower. Compound 2
