Leadership, Innovation, and Engineering Paper - Three theories/styles that apply to engineering leadership 1. Situational Theory with Participative style. 2. Trait Theory with Charismatic leadership style 3. Power and Influence Theory with Transformational leadership style. Participative leadership is a style of leadership that involves all team members of the team in identifying essential innovative goals and developing procedures or strategies to reach those goals. From this perspective, this leadership style can be seen as a leadership style that relies heavily on the leaders functioning as a facilitator rather than simply issuing orders or making assignments. This type of involved leadership style can be utilized in any business settings and volunteer organizations and I see one of the main benefits of this leadership style is that the process allows for the development of additional leaders who can serve the organization for a better future at a later date. Because leaders who favor this style encourage active involvement of everyone on the team, people often are able to express their creativity and demonstrate abilities and talents that would not be made apparent otherwise. The discovery of these hidden assets help to benefit the work of the team, but also alerts the organization to people within the team who should be provided with opportunities to further develop some skill or ability for future use. With globalization, technological advancements and tough market conditions are few of the many factors that have motivated the businesses to focus more on innovation and studies indicate that participative leadership style leads to innovative work behavior and employee commitment to change. I believe the major rationale behind participative
leadership is with employee commitment to change and leader prompting innovative work behavior is to investigate the role positive leadership style plays in developing change and innovative work behavior among employees. Innovative work culture and behavior has gained significant importance lately, mainly due to the rapidly changing global market need for the products and increased competition. Participative leaders succeeded in encouraging team-level innovation by getting involved early, and staying involved throughout the entire project, but giving team members the freedom to develop new solutions at the same time. They lead by example- when there is high team dynamics and with participation, improves engagement of team members. Charismatic leadership style leaders have the ability to inspire number of people and have positivity, optimism and passion for the given cause and can entice like-minded individuals to them easily. A charismatic leader is able to motivate teams to work through inspiration. Charismatic leaders connect with followers in such a manner that the follower feels special and needed, these leaders are sensitive to needs of the followers and are also responsive to those needs. Charismatic people around us make others feel great, instead of focusing on my own success and this helps to motivate employees through tough times and also help them stay grounded when things are good. Charismatic leaders tend to be able to see the gaps between what an organization delivers to its employees and what they need from the organization. Charismatic leaders have been known to have a tremendous influence on an organization and its team’s performance. I see them by acting confidently in an innovative and effective ways, the charismatic leader achieves radical change in the organization and is judged by its members to have achieved unusual success. It is interesting to see and consider how the charismatic leaders in context of
early stages of innovation process, they create a belief and vision in a specific innovation program. Charismatic leaders view Innovation delays are a major drain on new product revenues and new product return on investment. An example of this would be, 3 years ago we had a 2 day innovation brain storming session with the group. One of the leaders from our business unit came up an idea that if we generate 7 unique ideas from the group before the end of the session and it will time for celebration. The group was split into 3 teams, started discussions and generating ideas that can be implemented on our products. The group ended up with 13 ideas. Transformational leadership style works with his followers to identify the specific changes to create a vision for the organization through the changes and inspirational activities, executing different activities with the help according to the need it changes inside an organization. Creating an inspiring vision of the future, motivates people to buy in and deliver the vision, building long lusting and mutual trust-based relationships with employees. Despite various leadership styles we come across transformational leadership styles had received much more attention and compared to how the decisions are made and based on behavioral perspective. Any employee in an organization would prefer to have a leader of this kind who looks into the team member’s growth and development. Therefore, transformational leadership and particularly the facet of intellectual stimulation is theoretically a key contender for influencing innovation and will positively impact innovation. Transformational leadership has been positively correlated to innovation process and possesses the ability to motivate followers for participation in innovation and creativity, also they encourage teams or members to perform toward creative outcomes and create a supportive climate that could be served as a key mediator
